Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, and Coupling (US version sucked balls hence its cancellation).

It's both.
Basically, you can't go wrong with any British comedy. They may have bad teeth, but the Brits have the best senses of humor in the world, by far.
As per recommendations, check out Dinnerladies, French and Saunders, Vicar of Dibley, One Foot in the Grave, and Absolutely Fabulous. I'd also recommend Father Ted, but you're on that already, and Coupling is fantastic (make sure it's the British one, not the American one as it's a huge difference).
Again, you can't miss with anything really.

I'm not a fan of the American version of The Office, so I checked out the original and honestly, it's sort of silly and makes me chuckle but I really can't understand most of what they are saying. I'm not even being a dick, I just can't understand them.

Yes, "Fawlty Towers" is a classic! The DVDs are super expensive, though. Like you said, "Coupling" is hilarious. I also love "Keeping Up Appearances." Hyacinthe Bucket is like the British Lucy Ricardo.
However, I can't watch too many in a row...viewings need to be spread out.

Oh my gosh someone else who loves Keeping Up Apperances! One of my all time favorites along with Fawlty Towers. I also love Mr. Bean and Are You Being Served.
And Red Dwarf. How could you not adore that show?

i will definately be looking for red dwarf and coupling when i go to the library. i wish they would have made more episodes of spaced though. i really loved that one. especially the first series. also,
i love adult swim and i am all for them showing cult bbc shows, but i really wish they would show more garth meringe's dark place. also showing the young ones and full bottom again would be neat.

Are you having to buy the DVDs as imports since they are distributed by the BBC? They aren't that expensive over here.
Brit comedy i recommend:
Red Dwarf - one of my favorite shows of all time.
Monty Pythons Flying Circus
Blackadder
Black Books
Inbetweeners
Father Ted
Vicar of Dibley
Fawlty Towers
Only Fools and Horses
Game shows - QI
I'm Alan Partridge - I don't really like it but i do know some people who do.
EDIT: Oh yes The High Life.

Yes, I think the "Fawlty Towers" DVD (something like 12 episodes total) was around $70. I just "borrowed" my step-dad's copy--I say that because I'm not giving it back.

That's interesting you say that actually. My British wife and I had never seen either one before last year, so we figured we'd watch the British one first (since it came first and only has 12 episodes or so) then move on to the American one if we liked it.
Well, after three episodes of the British Office, we decided to check out how the American one stacked up and found that one MUCH more enjoyable. I don't know how it is, but the British version is kind of dark and depressing that makes you feel weird when it's done. Ricky Gervais came off as a total douchebag as opposed to Steve Carell who is just a total idiot, but lovable. I just found the American version to be lighter, funnier, and leaves you smiling at the end.

Being in the UK, I'm a fan. Although I like quite a lot of the US stuff too. Here are a few of the lesser known comedies and a few that haven't been mentioned yet:
Nathan Barley
Time Trumpet
IT Crowd
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
Mighty Boosh
And Peep Show. Seriously, watch Peep Show.

My mind cannot comprehend how people find Mighty Boosh or League of Gentleman funny..
To me it's just borderline retarded. Like they say the word shoe and people laugh...
Like seriously, what the fuck..

the thing i like about league of gentleman, alowishus, is that 1) it has percy percy from black addar in it, and 2) i feel like it paved the way for little britain. sure the plots for the show are indeed silly, but i like silly. though i must say, like i have found about little britain, the sketches do get a little repetitive. i mean you can only see andy fake being in a wheelchair so many times.

To be fair i loathe Little Britain as well. Katherine Tate too. It just gets too boring and repetitive. Just not my type of humor at all.
