So they had the New Year's maraton on yesterday (I didn't watch because of the irritating cuts due to commercial breaks). But I did flip it there to see a couple of my favorite episodes. I'd have to say my 2 favorites have to be "A Plumbing We Will Go" and "You Nazi Spy", the Stooges really peaked during the late 30's and early 40's. And even though my two favorites star Curly as the third stooge, I think I prefer Shemp overall. They've recently been rereleasing the Stooge shorts in chronological order (they're at 1954 right now) and I've been buying them. Some of the later ones really truly suck since they reused a TON of footage. Anyways, just thought I'd show my appreciation towards them and curious if there's any other fans on here?

I'm convinced the gender divide begins with the Three Stooges. Every single male I know, with zero exception, really thinks they're hilarious, while every female (myself included) I know just doesn't find them entertaining. I have no idea why this is.

Shemp was my favorite stooge, and I express regret that I never knew about the Stooge marathon...

Big fan of the Stooges and really need to get a bunch of their DVDs. I hope better ones have come out recently as last I checked into it, all that was available were just a few cheapy discs with 3 or so random shorts on them.

I caught the marathon at about 11 pm. They kept it going until 4 am, so I decided to record them. I haven't seen them on TV for years, which really saddens me. That's what I grew up watching. I even remember waking up early for school, which is amazing for someone like me, to watch some N.Y.U.K. on TNN or Spike. I'd have to say Curly is my favorite third Stooge, with Shemp a really close second.

I caught the plumbing one. It was pretty funny when Curly was trying to stop the water in the shower with all the pipes.

Yup...I remember growing up, these were your options:

*The Three Stooges Simply Hilarious! contains: Disorder in the Court, The Brideless Groom, Malice in the Palace, and Sing a Song of Six Pants

now granted, all 4 of these were classics...these were the only full shorts in public domain. Almost every single copy of this I've come across, they always misrepresent what's actually on the video, as the cover usually has a scene from another short that wasn't in public domain. The cat and dog sketch is absolutely hilarious to this day. Another interesting note is that Curly was supposed to have a cameo in Malice, but he got too sick again and had to leave.

*Stop, Look, and Laugh: contains ventiriliquist Paul Winchell introducing several edited Stooge shorts intertwined with his story.

this was a pretty good video, although most of the Stooge shorts were cut down to about 5 minutes each. I enjoy the Chimp Cinderella story though.

*The Three Stooges with Shemp: various videos that contained 3 Shemp episodes.

there were about 4 of these...none of which were very good as they usually mixed them all up and the sound was off (like almost all the other videos).

*Some video that had a yellow cover: contains almost anything you'll find of the Stooges in public domain, only heavily edited, also contains that godawful cartoon and a few TV appearances.

this video flat out sucked. I remember I bought it at Wal-Mart and back in those days...if I didn't like something, Wal-Mart usually allowed you to exchange it for something else. Almost all the pictures on the cassette are false advertisement. Almost as soon as I bought it, I took it back...and this was when I was 6.

*Jerks of All Trades: The "lost" pilot for a TV show based on the Stooges.

It's not really funny, since it's filmed in front of a "live" audience. Also the absence of the sound effects really doesn't help sell the slapstick. The boys work hard, but this just wasn't very good at all.

*Have Rocket Will Travel: one of the full length movies the Stooges released after the shorts at Columbia were done.

I hate Curly Joe. I hate him. He was by far the worst Stooge, which most people say Joe was, but I disagree. At least Joe had a character, Curly Joe would just stand there and basically do a half-assed Curly impression. Seriously, even DeRita (Curly Joe) himself said he didn't find the Stooges funny. Fuck him. Also, by the 60's the Stooges were old and withered and it was just plain sad to see them hit eachother, Larry especially looked in bad shape.

Also for the hell of it, here's a stock card of Curly in Malice in the Palace. Notice he's much slimmer due to his strokes, his part eventually went to Larry after he got sick.

And Panda, if you're serious about getting any Stooges DVDs, pick up the ones that have specific years on them, they look like this:

You can get them for around $20 and it's well worth it since there's around 6 hours of footage on each one you buy. There's 7 released so far with all of the Curly years and most of the Shemps.

Wow that's awesome, thanks for all that info. I'll definitely start picking up some of those DVDs, they look really nice. I'm overjoyed to see The Stooges finally getting a proper DVD release.

I enjoyed the Stooges as a child due to their outright slapstick comedy. Then later as an adult, I enjoy their womanizing and boozing, not to mention the puns and jokes thrown in there. I don't care if you can see the strings in their special effects, the Stooges are 9.9/10 in my book.

I love the Stooges. It's timeless, and it's one of few shows I can actually watch repeatedly and not get sick of.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

Once my girlfriend (before we started dating) said she loved the Three Stooges, I knew that I had to find a way to hold on to her and not let go.

She's literally the FIRST girl I know that loves the Stooges. We embark on short-watching marathons from time to time. I'm so lucky...Smile

You are very lucky.

I've found you have to show them certain episodes to get them interested, usually the ones that are more witty than zany, like "Violent is the Word for Curly", which contains that awesome "Swingin' Round the Alphabet" song.

Sean Penn dropped out, but they still have Benicio Del Toro as Moe and Jim Carrey as Curly.

I seriously cannot see this ever working, the project has been in developmental hell for at least 15 years.

And really, Hollywood SHOULD fucking know better by now, everytime they've decided to take an old series or something and set it in the present times, it just almost never works. The Stooges comedy was basically dead in the 50's, only saved by the baby boomer children who began to see it on TV. Even so, the Stooges weren't always about slapstick as seen by a lot of their earlier work. Of course the Farrelly brothers don't give a shit and think they can make a comedy out of this...it'll never work. Look at the Little Rascals movie, Leave it to Beaver, etc.
