Big fan of the Stooges and really need to get a bunch of their DVDs. I hope better ones have come out recently as last I checked into it, all that was available were just a few cheapy discs with 3 or so random shorts on them. |
Yup...I remember growing up, these were your options:
*The Three Stooges Simply Hilarious! contains: Disorder in the Court, The Brideless Groom, Malice in the Palace, and Sing a Song of Six Pants
now granted, all 4 of these were classics...these were the only full shorts in public domain. Almost every single copy of this I've come across, they always misrepresent what's actually on the video, as the cover usually has a scene from another short that wasn't in public domain. The cat and dog sketch is absolutely hilarious to this day. Another interesting note is that Curly was supposed to have a cameo in Malice, but he got too sick again and had to leave.
*Stop, Look, and Laugh: contains ventiriliquist Paul Winchell introducing several edited Stooge shorts intertwined with his story.
this was a pretty good video, although most of the Stooge shorts were cut down to about 5 minutes each. I enjoy the Chimp Cinderella story though.
*The Three Stooges with Shemp: various videos that contained 3 Shemp episodes.
there were about 4 of these...none of which were very good as they usually mixed them all up and the sound was off (like almost all the other videos).
*Some video that had a yellow cover: contains almost anything you'll find of the Stooges in public domain, only heavily edited, also contains that godawful cartoon and a few TV appearances.
this video flat out sucked. I remember I bought it at Wal-Mart and back in those days...if I didn't like something, Wal-Mart usually allowed you to exchange it for something else. Almost all the pictures on the cassette are false advertisement. Almost as soon as I bought it, I took it back...and this was when I was 6.
*Jerks of All Trades: The "lost" pilot for a TV show based on the Stooges.
It's not really funny, since it's filmed in front of a "live" audience. Also the absence of the sound effects really doesn't help sell the slapstick. The boys work hard, but this just wasn't very good at all.
*Have Rocket Will Travel: one of the full length movies the Stooges released after the shorts at Columbia were done.
I hate Curly Joe. I hate him. He was by far the worst Stooge, which most people say Joe was, but I disagree. At least Joe had a character, Curly Joe would just stand there and basically do a half-assed Curly impression. Seriously, even DeRita (Curly Joe) himself said he didn't find the Stooges funny. Fuck him. Also, by the 60's the Stooges were old and withered and it was just plain sad to see them hit eachother, Larry especially looked in bad shape.
Also for the hell of it, here's a stock card of Curly in Malice in the Palace. Notice he's much slimmer due to his strokes, his part eventually went to Larry after he got sick.
And Panda, if you're serious about getting any Stooges DVDs, pick up the ones that have specific years on them, they look like this:
You can get them for around $20 and it's well worth it since there's around 6 hours of footage on each one you buy. There's 7 released so far with all of the Curly years and most of the Shemps.
