Which is the best Star Wars movie?
This question has popped up in another thread. I thought it deserved a larger discussion.
As a child I used to love Return of the Jedi. It was great because the good guy won and there was a lot of light saber swinging.
As I got older I realized that Ewok's annoyed me and while Return of the Jedi was good, it was simply a conclusion.
Its not about the goal, its about the journey that gets you there. The Empire Strikes back was deep, dark, and dangerous. To me, it was the movie that had the most substance and the best plot twists. I also thought that the multiple locations visited during the movie were interesting.
Episode III was an action movie, and a good one at that. However, I just didn't feel like it was as meaningful of a Star Wars film. I also felt like Obi-Wan was portrayed as clumsy and dangerous to himself until the very end of the movie.
All in all, I actually liked all 6 movies, but Episode I and II had some specific parts that turned me off to them. But the best movie for me was definitely V.

Why isn't the Star Wars Christmas Special on the list?
Or the Ewok movies?

I liked the original the best.
I can't believe nobody knows about the sexual C-3PO trading card.

IV and V were my favorites, it's hard to choose between them. But to be different, I'll choose IV.
IV = V > III > VI > I > II

Empire was ok. I didn't like the Lando character that much.

I must respectfully disagree. The fight at the end is actually one of the main reasons why I hate the movie. I don't know, most of my friends don't get what I'm talking about, but something about the line "If you are not with me, then you are my enemy!!" just seems incredibly corny.

I still to this day thing VI is the best, mine goes in order by number for some reason
VI - V - IV - III - II - I
That is the order of my favorite to my least favorite and yes, I do say VI is better than V because not just because it brings conclusion it sort of shows the bond between Father and Son, Luke kicking a rancors ass, Jabba the Hutt getting pwned by Leia in a slave outfit (Hawt) (Sarcasm). Anyone that says something along the lines of V was the best, will be terminated by the Terminator himself.

I'm with you. The fight at the end of Episode I was great; the fights at the end of Episode II saved the movie as far as that was possible; the fight at the end of Episode III with its setting and the way the characters acted just seemed unreal to me. That, together with the fact that Anakin's turn to the Dark Side (the one thing the movie had to get right) didn't convince me, makes it my least favorite of the six. The general consensus seems to be that it was the best of the prequels though.

Yeah, the dialog in Sith could use a little work, but need I remind you of the sand conversation in Clones? I think I like Sith the most because it's the pivotal point in the story where the darkness that had been building up around the corruption of the old Republic finally takes hold and everything the heroes fought so hard to build is taken away in one fell swoop; the greatest hero of the Republic falls to the dark side, the soldiers Jedi have fought and died alongside for the entirety of the Clone Wars strike down their generals with a single command, the Jedi order itself is thrown into ruin and even the Grand Master must flee into exile in the face of the reborn Sith's might. Not to mention the Sith finally exacting their revenge after staying quiet for almost a thousand years. I think it's best summed up in Matthew Stover's intro to the novelization:
"This story happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. It is already over, nothing can be done to change it. It is a story of love and loss, brotherhood and betrayal, courage and sacrifice and the death of dreams It is a story of the blurred line between our best and our worst.
It is the story of the end of an age.
A strange thing about stories-
Though all this happened so long ago and so far away that words cannot describe the time or the distance, it is also happening right now. Right here.
It is happening as you read these words.
This is how twenty-five millenia come to a close. Corruption and treachery have crushed a thousand years years of peace. This is not just the end of a republic; night is falling on civilization itself.
This is the twilight of the Jedi.
The end starts now."
(which by the way, the novel is freakin' fantastic and fills in the story in a lot of places where the movie just skims over.)

What else would you expect from an emotionally stunted teenager? Either that or George Lucas cannot write dialogue.
Worst visual metaphor: The sun behind the head of Obi-Wan on the lava planet.
Best (accidental) visual metaphor: The emperor literally ripping apart the senate.
Who said they don't like the Lando character. You are SO wrong.
