I hate it when I like a movie and then one of the principal actors in it says he or she hated doing it.

The first one that springs to mind is Trapped In Paradise. I thought it was a very enjoyable film that brought together the talents of Nicholas Cage, Dana Carvey, and Jon Lovitz, but in one of his opening monolgues on The Dana Carvey Show, Dana said it sucked. I was heartbroken.

And Peter Weller said he hated doing RoboCop and RoboCop 2 because the suit was heavy and uncomfortable.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have said that Baseketball sucked, but that's my second favorite comedy movie, right behind the classic Animal House.

Christopher Reeve HATED Superman III and IV... Well, he liked the Superman vs. Superman fight in III, which was the best scene in the film. And he did clear up in a chapter of "Still Me" that his problems with Superman IV were the treatment of the script, budgetary issues, and cutting. It was not the movie he had originally envisioned, which I hope will one day be realized.

Mark Wahlberg also hated being in the "Planet of the Apes" remake, which I thought was one of the funniest films of that year. He later made fun of the experience during the second season of Entourage.

That did suck though. Tim Burton's remakes are dumb.

Oh, I didn't say it was good. It just kept me laughing. It seriously is a funny, funny senseless movie.

I couldn't laugh at "Charlie" though... I missed Gene Wilder way too much Crying

What amazes me is how many remakes Wahlberg did in such a short period of time, and every time replacing an all-time great actor. He was Charleton Heston (Planet of the Apes), Michael Caine (The Italian Job), and Cary freaking Grant (The Truth About Charlie).

Harrison Ford hated Blade Runner and refused to ever work with the director again because the movie almost buried his career.

Ewan McGregor was pretty open about thinking "The Phantom Menace" was "slow", though he warmed up to being in "Star Wars" by the time "Revenge of the Sith" rolled around.

Actually, a lot of SW actors have voiced frustration with their part in the franchise, not even as a sign of the quality of the films, but moreso as a reaction to the rabid fanbase... Sir Alec Guinness made a little boy cry apparently by telling him to stop watching the films so much and to go out and play.

Carrie Fisher had a pretty weird breakdown during an interview with "Star Wars Insider" of all things and hung up on the interviewer, only to call back later and apologize.

Liam Neeson said, after TPM, that he'd never do greenscreen again (which lasted all of one film).

Naomi Watts, after gaining a lot of recognition for "Mulholland Drive" cracked some jokes about the "Children of the Corn" sequel she was in, saying she was desperate for work when she did it.

James Purefoy was the original "V" in "V For Vendetta" but quit the movie complaining that it was too hard to act with the mask on.

Kevin Smith publicly apologized for "Mallrats" when he won some sort of indie award for "Chasing Amy"

There are others...

Ah, the urban myths continue... Like them all, some truth, but there's much more to the story.

I am reminded of talking to Cerina Vincent and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper at a convention. Vincent was extremely ashamed of her involvement with Power Rangers (not the original series, but Zeo or Geo or some other variation I've never heard). Piper couldn't even talk about "Hell Comes to Frogtown" and was surprised anyone could've liked it. As a side note, Piper's never seen "They Live" in its entirity. He even left during our screening! Razz

John Carpenter had wanted Piper to go on a walking tour of America to promote "They Live" where he was supposed to both promote the film and decry Reaganism. Piper refused because he liked Reagan.

Wow, he's never even seen his entire movie that he starred in? Fucking bad-ass. Piper is my ideal action hero, he's basically Duke Nukem. Does he seem taller in real life or shorter than in the movies / on TV?

Well, I thought the fuller story was that he liked the movie, but hated Universal's interference with it. If there's stuff I'm leaving out, I'd love to hear it (as opposed to thinking the wrong thing).

He wanted to do some scene with Silent Bob and cum but he was censured it might be too raw, then he saw Something About Mary and kicked himself for not doing it. Or something like that.

He wasn't exactly bitter about that. Nor was he that pissed at Universal. They did give him some notes, which is typical in the studio system. Smith really has been spoiled by working for Weinstein at Miramax as he's allowed to do pretty much whatever he wants (cause he's on Harvey's good side, you don't want to be on that man's shit list Shocked ).

One Universal note, for example, wanted a bigger opening scene to the film compared to a much more simple scene written by Smith. This resulted in a giant crane shot/single take which killed the comedic tone right from the start. That wasn't the fault of Universal and Smith was quick to change it.

Another issue he had with "Mallrats" was the marketing. He knew people would want to see it and would love it... if they knew about it. Alas, Gramercy did the promotion for the film and they're not as efficent as a major studio in advertising a film; in this case, Universal would've been a blessing

But, back to the apology, the remark was made at the Independent Spirit Awards, but it was meant as a joke. As Kevin has said:
Quote:
I was at The Spirit Awards one year, and I said, "I just really want to take this opportunity to apologize for MALLRATS, I don’t know what I was thinking." It was funny, it was a joke; it was tongue in cheek, everyone laughed. Roger Ebert heard it and assumed I was serious and every time he talked MALLRATS, he mentioned that I’d apologized for it. You’re just kind of like, "Dude, I was kidding. It was joke."

Most of the negativity Smith has around Mallrats comes from the critics. Because he'd made such a big impression with Clerks, the critics wanted to rip him apart for making a studio dick-and-fart joke picture. His response to this was found in a deleted scene in Chasing Amy in which two comic store clerks mock Banky and Holden for their comic using lines from one critic's review of Mallrats. The end credits of "Amy" even went on to say:

Quote:
And to the critics who hated our last flick - all is forgiven.

Which is actually the opposite of an apology Razz

Things people say are taken out of context all the time in "show-biz". We might remember Whoopi Goldberg getting misquoted back during the 2004 elections when she was accused of making a big anti-Bush statement to Edwards. Or better yet, Smith himself getting in trouble with Tim Burton based on his famous "Chasing Dogma" vs. "Planet of the Apes" statement (I'm really mad... tee-hee-hee).

Very minor confusion about it all really. Heck, Smith seems to get a lot of his fans based on their impression of the film.
