I didn' t see any threads for this, but i figure since we did it for games and movies why not music?
I'm gonna go with Collective Soul. You might not know any of their albums or song titles but ill be damned if you don't know the lyrics or melody when one of their many many hits come on. Really great band that changed with the times. Started as a Light grunge band in the early 90s but ended up with a general rock sound today.

I agree. Collective Soul was one of the less suckier bands of the plaid wearing phenomana that was grunge.
I am going to say Bad Religion. Some of the best lyrics ever written, spanning over 10 albums, and they are still going. Unfortunately they get overlooked a lot, and more people recognize mediocre punk bands such as Black Flag and Minor Threat. Good bands, but not that good.

I always felt that Marilyn Manson was underrated as a musician because everyone was too busy being freaked out by his pasty white ass.
THere's some good material from 94 to Mechanical Animals, and the latest one album despite it's incredibly lame title is one of his best albums imo.

Collective Soul is an amazing band.
Switchfoot is usually brushed off as a lame Christian band, but they're anything but. Their singer, Jon Foreman, is one of the most talented songwriters I've ever heard, and their songs have so many little details and weird sounds to them. And they're not so much a Christian Rock Band as they are a rock band with Christian members. They don't preach their religion because they want the music to be all-inclusive. I don't think of Christianity one bit when I listen to them.
In terms of single underrated albums, Van Halen III definitely. Yes it's different, and doesn't sound much like Van Halen at all, but the riffs are crushing, the solos are incredible, the songs are good.

During my Van Halen fanboy phase last year, I was questioning whether or not VH III was a truly bad album or everyone was just pissed that Gary Cherone was the new singer.
In terms of underrated Artists, I'm gonna go with Overkill, and possibly Motorhead.

Dosage is my favorite. Probably their poppiest album, but chock full of great melodies and there's a few chunkier rock tunes on there too.

I have always thought of Mindless Self Indulgence as unrated. Mainly FGWSSS, but everything of theirs before You'll Rebel to Anything was unappreciated.

Neil Young. People nowa days don't recognize him the way they should, not interested in older music I guess.
Elliot Smith I think as well, he was a pretty damn good song writer, and played all of the instruments in his songs(except when live).
I'm not sure if they are underrated, but Dream Theater, John Petrucci is a god and regular people don't recognize him as such.

I always felt Trent Reznor was underappreciated. Especially after the recent album Ghosts I-IV. That album was amazing.
And it's funny you mention Mindless self Indulgence nihilisticglee, cause I was gonna say that.

MSI has some pretty fucking funny songs. They don't get so much love or credit, because there are too many people that won't accept music that is about a lot of the subject their songs are based on.

Not really a huge Van Halen fan, but their "Balance" album in the mid-nineties was really good. Most people hated it.
I think the most underrated regular rock and roll band of all time is "The Band".

I know a lot of people who dislike them for the song I Hate Jimmy Page, even though the song has next to nothing to do with Jimmy Page. That being said, You'll Rebel to Anything and IF have gotten enough attention to make Billboard, which is a major step in the right direction for MSI. I hope their next album has even more success and they keep getting the recognition they deserve.

Most people only know them for songs like Weird Science and Dead Man's Party, but they have tons of awesome songs, that were way ahead of thier time.
Personal favorite: "Insanity" (look it up on Youtube or something)

I'm going to have to say . . . Blue Oyster Cult, but that's because their my favorite band and it seem like everyone is hung up on Don't Fear the Reaper, it's an awesome song but they have so many awesome songs BOC has done (Just to put into perspective how much of a fan of BOC i am, i even like the album Club Ninjia, which even BOC says is their worst album.)

Syd, did you mention Savatage?
They are one of my all time favorite power metal bands.
Criss Oliva is by far underrated and underappreciated for his talents, one of the greatest guitarists ever, yet never recognized, and died so tragically, damn drunk driver hit him.

Protest the hero, though there pre-kezia material sucked something fierce.

Removing an evil nigga spirit from a negro is as hard as removing the stink from a hunk of s***. We must use these tools that the great god has given us to fight niggas: a whip, a noose, a nightstick, a branding iron. These things strike fear into a niggas heart....a JOB APPLICATION! |
