I downloaded every episode of this show. Love it.

I know why people would call it brain dead, mindless television, but now watching it with a "mature" mind I see that it was VERY well done considering it followed the 80s era of cartoons. This was also the era that gave us Exo-Squad, Sonic (ABC), Mighty Max, etc. Cartoons really had it going on in the early 90s. They put real quality into it.

There was also a live action show of the same name a decade later. I've ordered this.

Was this the one where he had a pet phoenix and went around looking for Mythril so he could beat the evil god Set, his followers, and that one guy who was a total rip-off of Serpentor?

If so, I fucking loved that cartoon.

I though the Pet Phoenix came out of his shield or something

Fox had a pretty cool Peter Pan cartoon that ran for a few seasons. And dont forget Pirates of Dark Water and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. Early 90s did have some awesome toons.

Then there was this one about sea researchers who if they touched water became half human half underwater things. can never remember what its called.

erock462's right, Needle came in and out of his shield. He liked pomegranates, but I'm not sure about Mythril. Set was the big bad of the series but never showed up on Earth until the last three episodes. Plus, all he wanted to do in the end was eat Conan and his friends. Vore!

I rewatched the Exo-Squad pilot and you know how we've watched stuff from our past and said: That wasn't as great as I remember? Not true for Exo-Squad. That episode had some top notch writing and was nothing short of brilliant which was quite a feat considering they had 20 minutes to fill the audience in on a whole rich back story of terraforming and Neo Sapien rebellion. People died in the pilot, they didn't hold back.

After the episode I noted that it was made by Universal Animations, the same company that did Conan. This made me realize the reason why early 90s cartoon shows were stellar were because of the company working behind the scenes. Universal Animations were doing supurp work, FOX animation broke in later with Batman, plus Fox had X-Men and Spider, although I don't know which company produced those. I can't seem to find who produced Mighty Max. Spielberg also had a kick ass animation department.

We need animated shows to be a product of companies again. I think the studios have too much control over the shows these days which I feel hurts them.

But these are all vague observations.

The sad truth truth about Universal Animation Studio, was they quality-ed themselves out of business. Since they put so much time, effort, and money into exo-squad and the like, thier products were too expensive to produce. Eventually, the animation studio got axed as it wasn't profitable enough for the big wigs.

The cheap trend now-a-days is to buy a Japanese show, overdub it, and throw it on TV. No writer costs and no production costs. Just some Audio Studio time with a few voice actors and a royalty fee to Japan. Boom! Easy money.

And, if anyone does make a cartoon in house. They write it, draws a few key frames, and then ship it to Korea for cheap animation labor.

I think somewhere, Don Bluth is softly weeping like the Indian who saw you litter.
