so.... i called in to work and said my grandfather died so i can get bereavement. now, my grandfather has been dead for about 15 years. so, technically, i shouldnt be doing this. is it unethical to think that i have bereavement credit that i have to use up?

It is unethical, but I don't think any less of you. Sounds like some George Costanza logic to me.

I agree with Tebor. Did you take bereavement when your grandfather actually died?

It's only unethical if you are taking it off to take it off which I guess is what your doing. Companies who offer bereavement pay can't tell you when your suppose to grieve, so atleast you can't really get in trouble. They might want to get you evaluated psychologically though if it took you 15 years to grieve though. Laughing

i was too young to actually be working when he passed away. but technically, my grandfather on my father's side passed away like 7 months ago, so i can technically be grieving for him.

My company checked to see if my grandfather actually died last year, by asking me for the address of the funeral home, under the guise of sending flowers. That way, they made sure I wasn't lying, plus they impressed me with the quality flowers they sent.

So, username, be careful your superiors don't doublecheck your story by asking for your grandfather's full name and then reviewing the obituaries or something.

Its not legal for a company who offers bereavement to tell you when to grieve, so Username I wouldn't worry about it.

I say my mother died at every job I've ever held for the time off. I figure if I say it enough, maybe it will actually happen or something.
