Everyone knows that some Canadians pronouce "about" as "aboot".
What about words that rhyme with "about?" Are those pronounced similiarly?
Is bout pronounced "boot?"
Is clout pronounced "cloot?"
Is shout pronounced "shoot?"
Is out pronounced "oot?"
If not, please do so now. I demand consistency.

Actually, we pronounce them "about", "bout", "clout", "shout", and "out"
We pronounce dickhead the same way too.

If I'm listening to somebody talk, who sounds no different from me (actually, I probably sound a little more "redneck", but what can you do, I was raised on the Missouri/Kansas border), I can always tell if they are Canadian when the use an "out" word. Kind of the same way that people from Minnesota and Wisconsin. No accent at all. Then one or two words give them away.
But nobody get offended. Its not a bad thing. No worse than talking like a redneck for sure. But its always a sure fire way to know if I'm watching Canadian television.

Well, I don't know about oot. When I hear it, it sounds more like abouoot. But the sound isn't as long as the word is. If that makes any sense at all. Other than words like that, and maybe a few others I can't think of, I don't really notice any accent. Aside from French accents.

Whenever someone talks about accents, I generally turn on the thickest Newfoundland accent I can. The response is usually a blank stare.
Owshegettinonwha? Lardtunderin, IzouttadayonmeYammyncameboutdiscloztarunninschlowzointdabroadsideofamoose.
Also Blackout Boy, are you really so conceited that you feel the need to quote yourself?

How do you think people feel when they do it to me and I go into full redneck or ebonics mode? I'm from the KC area, so I have to be fluent in both. And both, although polar opposites, have influenced the way I talk and the things I say. So people get really confused.

haha, I bet I'm the only one here who has any remote clue what the fuck Val just said. My neighbours are Newfies lol.
And scamrock, the abouoot is the perfect explanation, and I agree with that more.
And hey, fuck French Canadians. They bitch out until we make French an official language, but if you put English on a sign in Quebec, you go to fuckin JAIL.

I'm an east coast kid.

I mostly agree, but remember that Quebec chicks are HAWT. Seriously, it's genetic.
Anyway, I've gotta say, Syd, you cut me deep with this thread. I never thought I'd hear this nonsense from someone I respect. I think I've been a little disillusioned today.
What I mean, of course, is that Canadians do NOT say 'aboot' They say 'about'. Yanx mistake this for 'aboot' because they say 'aBOWt'.
To answer your question:
| Quote: |
| What about words that rhyme with "about?" Are those pronounced similiarly? |
Yes, those words are all pronounced the same way as 'about'. Note that the vowel sound in those words does not rhyme with 'wow'. In other words, it's:
bout
clout
shout
out
and not:
bowt
clowt
showt
owt.
Now you know!

I only this up because Val made a video about RegalSin awhile back... I was watching it again a day ago and I noticed he said about in the stereotypical Canadian fashion. I have nothing against Canada. You guys gave us Kids in the Hall, Rush, most of the best non-Japanese non-Mexican professional wrestlers, and a bunch of other good stuff that I'm too lazy to list. And as I mentioned like a week or two ago, I am seriously considering converted most of my money to Canadian dollars because your currency is far more stable than ours.

You are forgiven Syd. And thank you for realizing that Canada provides much!

While we're commenting on Canada, I've always meant to say that Chilliwack sounds delicious.

This is very true. I remember me and some friends drove up to BC when we were 19 (To drink, mostly.) and, the first thing we noticed was, "Do they not breed any ugly girls here? They must kill them at birth or something." Because every girl we saw was hot.

Hey guys, just to let you know, if I don't respond, it's because I'm at my girlfriends place for the next 24 days or so.
What happened was, when I was a kid, my mother had told me my grandmother was murdered. She even said that on a episode of Unsolved mysteries, and there was a tombstone with her mothers name that my mother and I visited every once in awhile because she thought she was protecting me from the truth.
What really happened was, my grandmother had 5 kids. The youngest daughter was kidnapped and never seen again, my grandmother had gone in a total breakdown and was put into a mental hospital because of this. My mom tried to hide this from me, until today.
The thing is, I hate conspiracies, and the fact that my own mother pulled one on me my whole life is horrible. I mean I would have been totally ok if she just told me the truth from day one, rather then waiting till I'm 19. I mean even after my dad killed himself, and I saw my great-grandmothers corpse be put in a body bag, she thought that my grandmother being in a mental home would have depraved me. I mean I forgive my mom, but I also feel horribly sick to my stomach. I just don't know if I can trust her anymore.
