Mark Wahlberg to star in 'Max'
Actor, Moore feel Fox's 'Payne'
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Nov. 8, 2007
Twentieth Century Fox has Mark Wahlberg in the crosshairs for "Max Payne," a live-action adaptation of the bestselling Rockstar videogame that will begin early next year. John Moore will direct.
Wahlberg is negotiating to play the titular cop who is haunted by the tragic loss of his family and has little regard for rules as he investigates a series of mysterious murders. He finds himself up against an adversary bent on destroying Max and the streets he protects.
The script was written by Beau Thorne. Julie Yorn is producing through Firm Films, along with Scott Faye.
Wahlberg will make the film after he completes "The Lovely Bones" for director Peter Jackson and DreamWorks. He recently starred for the studio in the M. Night Shyamalan-directed "The Happening," which will be released next summer.
Moore has directed "Behind Enemy Lines," "Flight of the Phoenix" and "The Omen" for Fox. He also is developing a live-action adaptation of the Virgin Comics title "Virulents" for Fox and New Regency. |

A lot of people don't like Marky Mark as an actor but i don't think he's that bad. He really has a niche as a gritty go to guy.

Personally, I think Donnie has proven to be a better actor in terms of methodology and role diversity... However, I think Marky Mark was a fairly good choice for Max. But seeing him in that picture has made me realize this could be just another Mark Whalberg movie...
However, positives from the picture:
* SNOW!
* New York
* I think that's Alfred Woden's car due to the lack of a Vodka license plate.

That game is so possible as a movie, and Wahlberg is great in those kinda flicks...I have no qualms.

Mark Wahlberg can't carry a movie on his own. He struck gold in Boogie Nights because of the supporting cast, the script, and the director...lightning in a bottle.
Since then, he's been good/great in supporting roles but his "leading man" movies have been garbage.
Max Payne should be a taller, thinner guy. Hell, in the game he looks like the guy from those old Slim Jim commercials (no, not Macho Man).

While I agree about his look, I do believe that Max Payne is being made by competent filmmakers this time.

I've lost all faith in Max Payne and the company producing just because of Scott Miller and Scott Faye.
They mean well, but reading that interview I was thinking: you guys are the fucking Antichrist.
And Faye made "Test Tube Teens From The Year 2000" which is legendary.
Hollywood Reporter wrote: |
"We want each of our media to stand on its own," explains Miller. "In our opinion, when you try to release a game and a movie simultaneously, you compromise the quality of one or the other, and it's usually the game that gets the short end of the stick. Movies usually take 10-15 months to create while it's hard to make a good game so quickly."
Miller should know; his company, 3D Realms, is notoriously famous for releasing games "when they are ready." "Prey" took 4-1/2 years to build while "Duke Nukem Forever" was started in April 1997 and still isn't out. That was 11 years ago.
While Miller does anticipate Radar projects to move along more swiftly, he doesn't expect their quality to be sacrificed. Indeed, Radar's executive creative director, Raphael van Leirop, has been quoted as saying that he is "sick and tired" of seeing his favorite games butchered at the theaters, and that he would "never let anyone in the film industry take one of his beloved properties and spit out some B-movie garbage."
Ironically, Faye has been involved in his share of B-movies, including -- according to IMDB.com -- "Blonde Heaven," "Test Tube Teens From The Year 2000," and "Venom."
But, he says, despite his "earlier Roger Corman-like, low-budget experiences," he plans to turn Radar's games into "incredibly cool films.
"I promised Scott [Miller] that I would not let 'Max Payne' -- and the subsequent Radar-inspired movies -- be train wrecks like so many other game-to-film adaptations. That was my commitment to him. And I believe that the films we'll be producing represents an incredible opportunity to break through and have movies that stand alone and succeed based on their video game concepts. I really believe that." |

Didn't they already make a Max Payne movie in everyway but name with Mel Gibson? I believe it was called Payback.
Also, why would they be making a movie? The first Max Payne game was a blockbuster, but that was many years ago; the sequel sold very poorly, and that's why there is no max payne 3. Maybe this is to kick-start the franchise?

Payback was totally different.
I don't know...after seeing the Departed, I'm a little more sold on the idea that it has potential. That said, I'm looking forward to it sucking. If you prepare for the worst and hope for the best, you're seldom dissapointed.

Dude, that doesn't make things better. I went into "Silent Hill" knowing that it would suck and it did not relieve the pain any.

I like Mark Walhberg, I think he's one of the better actors out there. As Max Payne goes it's one of my favorite PS games. We'll see I guess.

thoughts? I like it. I think it could have benefitted a little more from some sin city flair, but I definitely like the music they used.

Word. I'm confused.
I'm with it though, even if it's being a little untrue to the source material.
