My trip to a stupid place made me sad

While I was on my trip to a far away place I was talking to a person who lives there about music.

Nothing too complicated, but a song came on. You know that craptastic version of Hurt that Johnny Cash did just before he died?

Yeah that's the song.

This person actually thought that the Cash version was the original and that Nine Inch Nails had covered it...

They expressed their distaste for the "cover" and was clear that they didn't think it was right for a band like NIN to cover a nice song like the one that Cash wrote.

The End.

Johnny Cash has the superior version, despite the wrong-ity of that timeline.

Trent Reznor himself has said that Cash made the song his own.

I hate people with no real knowledge in music. It's especially bad in this P2P generation where everyone thinks every song ever was done by AC/DC or The Rolling Stones cuz Limewire said so.

I once bitchslapped one of the preppiest kids in school with documented evidence that "Stuck In The Middle With You" was not, in fact, by The Steve Miller Band, but by Steeler's Wheel. He dropped the History class we had together shortly afterwards...

I got into a fight with some idiot who was saying that "Gypsy" was by AC/DC. Although, to be fair, Gypsy does sound AC/DCish.

I get mad when I see every 80s rock ballad labelled as being by Poison on P2P networks. Poison did not do "Heaven", "18 and Life", or "Don't Know What You've Got Til It's Gone", goddamit.

The Cash version of Hurt isn't bad, but the NIN version is better. The Cash version is also kinda overhyped and overused, which ruins it for me.

Cash does my favorite version of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" though. The original version by The Band is kind of annoying, and Joan Baez fucked up several of the lines.

P2P, Poison... They still exist?

I would pay for new music if "shitty" weren't the only genre out right now.

Man.. I think I'm getting old.

I gave up on real music long ago. Go soundtracks. Best genre for weird, wild diverse shit. Go "Atonement" soundtrack. Razz

And Akira Yamaoka.

You ain't gettin old GP, I just bought a few more albums this week that came out before I was born. I was born in 1989, I'm only 19 next week, and this garbage on the radio they call music is the music of my generation. May I speak on behalf of my generation and apologize for being a big fucking disappointment?

Dude 1989... That was a fucking year.

I remember listening to GNR Lies, trying to figure out why One In a Million existed.

I remember the fall of the Berlin Wall.

And of course... I remember...

As Nasty As They Wanna Be - Once again, fuck you Jack Thompson.

I don't lol. But GNR Lies is one of my favorite albums. Seriously, go look at my ball-crushing record collection. Only a handful of the bands I listen to formed after my birth.

Have you considered making a world tour out of this?

You could make T-Shirts and stuff and sell tickets.

(Don't mind the angry bitter GPFontaine today... not that it is much different than usual, but in about 1 hour he is having his wisdom teeth removed... so extra bitterness today, until the meds kick in.)
