...Hendrix was the best ever?

I say yes.

And I say if you disagree, you are incorrect.

A Hendrix song was in "Masters of the Universe: The Motion Picture", therefore Hendrix is the best ever. Cool

To quote:

That's one cool motherfucker. I'd say he was the greatest guitarist to ever live, in terms of evolving the art and innovating.

Eddie Van Halen is now the greatest living guitarist, as well as the greatest hard rock guitarist of all time. A worthy heir to a mighty throne I'd say

I would like to throw Robert Johnson into this thread, just for the sake of discussion.

I can only do Johnson in small doses due to the similar sound in many of his songs, and the age of the recordings is not something I always want to hear either.

I am a guitarist, and have been for close to 5 years, but I don't think I can explain it...it is just perfect, end of discussion. It soars, and moves. Also, when he combines delay with wah right after, it makes me piss myself...almost

My personal Top 5 is EVH, Slash, Hendrix, Page, and Angus Young.

5 Greatest Guitarists though, I'd do Hendrix, EVH, then the Yardbird Three (Page, Clapton, and Jeff Beck)

hendrix :

- not as fast and fancy as EVH or Satch

- not as crystal clear as Clapton

- not as rigourously practiced as a concert classical guitarist

BUT - simply the most lyrical, groundbreaking and goddamm funky rock guitarist that ever strummed. pretty much untouchable.

agreed, but put them all in a line and look at the jump hendrix gives to the genre. You can argue of course that Johnson had a bigger impact, but due to it being the earliest years of recorded music, its easy for him to seen like the 'inventor' of the blues, when he quite obviously wasn't, just a great exponent of it.

and yes, muddy makes hendrix. but listen to hendrix and he blows him away. but put hendrix against all the people influenced by him and.... well i don't really know anyone who comes close....

btw, anyone have the Hendrix BBC sessions album? it is incredibly good.

Gotta go with Clapton if we're talking technical skill, but Hendrix if we're talking about making the guitar really speak.

Any love for Frampton?

I didn't know we were doing five, I only gave four. Oh well, I'd put up Mr. Stevie Ray Vaughan as my fifth.

Hendrix was pretty much God at his time. There may be guys nowadays that can outplay him, but none who broke as much guitar ground as he did, or with as much passion and soul (though SRV might be number two in that regard). It's also of note that at the time Hendrix was around, the Wah-Wah pedal had only been recently invented, and the fact that he'd mastered it so soon after its creation, and in such a short amount of time really says something. (Short time: 1966-1970, I believe it was Frank Zappa who showed Jimi the wah.)

And my favorite guitarists (not necessarily best)
In Metal:
Dimebag Darrell (Pantera, Damageplan), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne), Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman (Slayer), Dave Mustaine (Megadeth, ex-Metallica), Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom), Gary Holt (Exodus), Andreas Kisser (Sepultura), Overkill's various guitarists, and I've started to dig the various guitar players from Budgie. I do NOT dig Kirk Hammett. Mustaine was waaaay better as a guitarist and a songwriter.

In others:
Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Scott Gorham/Brian Robertson from Thin Lizzy, Jimi Hendrix, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Brian May (Queen), and I've started to dig Tim Sult from Clutch.

'Course, I'm a bassist, so factor that in.
