I remember hearing on a commentary that it was a giant metal door scraping closed mixed with some animal sound or other.

I edited a horror film a couple of months ago and used some monster sound effects from the Riddick game. I filtered most of them and hopefully no one will ever find out and sue.  Of course, it's not the best film in the world, so there's a definite chance no one outside of 20 people will ever see it.
