It's pretty widely accepted that Cheryl Crow's bastardization of Sweet Child o Mine is the worst cover in human history.
Any takes on the best?
This one gets my vote for sounding like LZ and Floyd. Unfortunately, it's not. Regardless, this kicks ass.
EDIT: Not sure what's up with YouTube, but if you just click play on the player, it works even though it looks like it's still loading.
Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

It's made a couple of Worst Covers lists, but I am very partial to the Guns N' Roses version of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door".
And the Lone Rangers' cover of "Degenerated" is about 2000 times better than original Reagan Youth version.
Best Covers:
Hurt-Johnny Cash (Originally by Nine Inch Nails)
All Along The Watchtower-Jimi Hendrix (Originally by Bob Dylan)
Little Wing and Voodoo Child-Stevie Ray Vaughan (Both originally by Jimi Hendrix)
Children of Bodom-Just about anything, except for "Silent Scream", and "Mass Hypnosis". You just can't touch the originals on that one.
Metallica-Stone Cold Crazy (Originally by Queen), Breadfan and Crash Course in Brain Surgery (both by Budgie), Blitzkreig (Originally by Blitzkreig)
Overkill-Fuck You (Originally by The Subhumans)
Megadeth-Paranoid (Originally by Black Sabbath)
Sepultura-Symptom of the Universe (Originally by Black Sabbath)
Anthrax-Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Originally by Black Sabbath)
Goldfinger-99 Red Balloons (Originally by Nena, also "99 luftballoons")
The Dead Kennedys-I Fought The Law (Originally by Sonny Curtis and the Crickets)
Napalm Death-Nazi Punks Fuck Off! (Originally by The Dead Kennedys)
Krokus-Ballroom Blitz (Originally done by Sweet)
Slayer-Guilty of Being White and Filler/I Don't Wanna Hear It (Originally by Minor Threat)
The So-So:
Metallica-Die, Die My Darling and Last Caress/Green Hell (Originally by The Misfits) It's thrashier than the originally, but no human alive can touch Danzig's vocals.
Pantera-Planet Caravan and Hole in the Sky (Originally by Black Sabbath)
Machine Head-Hole in the Sky (Originally by Black Sabbath)
Worst:
Avenged Sevenfold, Fall Out Boy, Trivium, and just about every other band that seems to be unaware that Pantera had songs that were actually kinda tough to play-Walk
Killswitch Engage-Holy Diver (Originally by Dio) (Heavier guitar-good. Screamo vocals + breakdown=EPIC FAIL!)
Arch Enemy-Symphony of Destruction (Originally by Megadeth) (Why not cover a thrashier 'Deth song?)
Guitar Hero 80's-Police Truck, Caught in a Mosh, etc. (Originally by The Dead Kennedys and Anthrax)
Guitar Hero III-Holiday in Cambodia (Originally by the Dead Kennedys) (Why do the hate DK so much?)

Hey Enshin, Voivod does a cover of Holiday in Cambodia. It's freakin' awesome. I'd have to say that Witchery's cover of Fast as a Shark or Florsam and Jetsam's cover of Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting would take first place.

I'll have to look up that Holiday in Cambodia cover. I've heard "Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting", and it is a good cover. I would personally like to cover "Crocodile Rock" in the style of thrash metal. It'd be good.

Yeah, it's on some obscure live album.

i feel bad that most of dylans songs i prefer to have sung by people named something other than dylan.

I do too. Then again I've never heard the original.
Somebody already mentioned Overkill's "Fuck You" and Hendrix's "Watchtower." I'd like to throw in in Judas Priest's "Green Manilishi", Van Halen's "You Really Got Me", and Motorhead's versions of "God Save The Queen" and "Louie Louie."
Also, I might be the only one who thinks this, but Megadeth's version of "Anarchy In The UK" completely destroys the original.

I think the Reel Big Fish cover of Take on Me was pretty sweet.

I liked Elvis' 'like a bridge over troubled water' version more than I liked the version by Simon & Garfunkel.

I know I wrote it on these boards somewhere, but Nightwish's "Over the Hills and Far Away" (Gary Moore cover, not Zeppelin). Not the best cover ever, but one I enjoy a hell of a lot.

I know it's cliche but "The Man Who Sold The World" cover by Nirvana is one of my favorites. "Turn The Page" (Metallica) is an alright cover. IMO, the worst cover EVER, again, IMO, is "Sweet Dreams" covered by M. Manson. I apologize to those who like this version, but MM doesn't hold a candle to Lennox vocally and the quiet singing Marilyn employs makes no sense to me. In all fairness I find the cover of "Another Brick In The Wall part II" by Class Of '99 to be terrible too, and Layne Staley is my favorite vocalist of all time, so...
PS
Korn did a good job with "ABitW".

Yeah, the Class of '99 version of Another Brick in the Wall is pretty infuriating.
I hated korns cover of brick due to the fact it seemed like a straight up cover and they tried to sound way to much like the original. i prefer when bands use their sound for the cover blending both bands influence.

Dramarama's cover of KISS's "Goin' Blind" is pretty awesome.

Detractors would say a band might make it sound too "modern" though. Nowadays that's not a compliment.

I'm inclined to agree with you 100% ross. It's like nobody is trying anymore, there is nothing new coming out and bands are becoming famous for no reason. I mean, back when Zeppelin and Sabbath were out they were the new thing. And then you had Metallica and then the Grunge era. Now you got bands like Limp Bizkit doing their 'ANNOYING' thing and Nickelback (my least favorite band other than Linkin Park) just being a bunch of douchebags. Even bands like the Chili Peppers are keeping in their safety zone, apparently afraid to stray from the tried and true. I hope a band comes out that has a new edge or something, I'll never tire of classic rock but I need more.
PS
Sublime was pretty original too in their day.

Don't worry man, give me and my band Chainsaw Symphony a couple years, it'll be back to the good times again

I think your music knowledge is a bit dated? Limp Bizkit hasn't put out a successful record in like 6 years. That age passed awhile ago. If your gonna get mad at pop music of today try and make sure its today.
Oh i hate all these hair bands that are coming out nowadays. Slaughter and Trixter are just ripoffs of the good bands.
If you really want to find new and interesting music its not that hard. For every nickelback their is something like Five Finger Death Punch somewhere to be found.
