Quote:
A nude portrait of Golden Girls star Bea Arthur sold for a whopping $1.9 million at Christie's auction house this week. The pricey painting went to one lucky, anonymous phone bidder.

The controversial artist John Currin painted "Bea Arthur Naked" in 1991, which features the late actress in nothing but her birthday suit. It's just one of many nude paintings created by the artist, who tends to choose provocative women -- both celebrities and nonentities -- as his subject matter.

Did you never see that classic episode of The Cosby Show where The Coz and his wife are unknowingly bidding on the same record, one physically at the auction and the other over the phone?

Good ol'-fashioned auction hijinks were a theme in sitcoms of the late 80's/early 90's, apparently.
