We get people at work whining about bread sizes. I'm sorry Gemelli's delicious fresh-baked buns aren't all perfectly-sized to the same length. Isn't home-made bread awful.
It's sad how Subway went from "awesome" to your average jack-off with no taste buds, to rated as "bad" by pretty much everyone. Gas station subs are even better than them. I don't know too many people who actually enjoy them anymore. When that weird boom that Subway saw came in, we had like four, with one more being built within this one mile radius. Now we're down to two scummy ones.

The quality really has gone down in most ones I've been to over the years. The bread no longer tastes the same, none of the stuff seems "fresh" (not like it really ever was) and it's just lackluster. I can make something better in my kitchen in minutes, and usually for far cheaper.

I've been getting spoiled, myself. Sandwiches are like pizza- if the dough/bread is crap, there's not much you can do to make it better. Here in State College, we recently got a real nice bakery. Between that, a Trader Joe's, and our amazing coffee shop that sells its own roasted beans, I rarely eat out anymore. My problem with Subway is that everything tasted the damned same. Granted, it was better than other fast food, but I almost never ate fast food anyway. But the fact that I really couldn't tell the difference between eating roast beef or turkey just seems weird after being a Jersey kid who got to eat home-made pastrami before we moved out to PA.
I also really hate "do it yourself" restaurants or whatever. As a socially awkward person, I don't like getting interrogated at each little station for my lunch. And as a cook, I want to know someone took the care to carefully craft a flavorful meal that I can experience, not just order a bunch of processed, portion-controlled crap on my mental checklist. It's gotten to the point where if I walk into a restaurant, ask for a BLT or something, then have the kid stare at me and ask what I want on it, I pretty much just leave without saying a word.

One thing that does frustrate me is how managers are always (sometimes literally) breathing down employees' necks when they're putting toppings and whatnot on my sandwich, which usually leads to a freaking paltry amount of toppings on it.

you specifically have to ask for "lots of [topping]" otherwise they give you the bare minimum. which is crap, cuz the bare minimum for olives is 6 on each side and onions is about the same.

Not to mention people like their sandwiches/subs made a certain way. When I get a sub from Subway or anywhere else, I always get a BLT without tomatoes (I don't hate tomatoes, I just prefer my sub without them) and with cheddar cheese. Some people like olives, for example. That's why they ask what you want on it.

Exactly, it seems like they barely ever put enough onions on the sandwich. I try to avoid asking for more toppings when the managers are around, though, if only because I've noticed that managers tend to give employees a death glare to make sure the employees give the bare minimum amount of "more".

Absolutely. There's restaurant in Chicago that essentially makes gourmet burgers, and they will not take custom orders. In their menu, it explains that they put a lot of thought into the way the flavors will line up, and that if you knew better than them, you wouldn't be paying them to make food for you. Americans like to customize everything, but professional chefs know what they're doing.

Yeah they are especially stingy with jalapenos. You are lucky if you get three per side because wimpy idiots order them and then complain that their sandwich is too spicy, as if jalapenos were actually spicy at all. You basically have to beg them to give you enough to even taste the stupid things.

I think he's saying that a BLT is so simple to make that someone asking him how he wanted it was insulting. Which I can understand, at least, it is pretty simple, but it's just a sandwich! Plus I find it odd that someone asking for a BLT sandwich is being picky about how the employee presents the sandwich. Greg must only get BLTs from gourmet restaurants.

Yeah, it sucks when my boss or manager does that. I usually make really good sandwiches, plenty of whatever people want, but some random person's sandwich isn't worth me getting yelled at for not knowing how make sandwiches

I loathe picky people. Having allergies and avoiding certain things because of them is one thing, but when you get upset because you don't like the taste of something or don't want ingredient A mixed with B, or you get upset that some people have to ask questions because they are trained to or because there are not as experienced or intelligent enough to understand your eccentricities and the way you think just makes you a major fucking Class-A Douchebag. Go live in some third world shithole where you have to eat maggot infested rice, you spoiled motherfuckers.

I have two subway sandwiches of choice:
Buffalo chicken sandwich
Italian herbs & cheese bread
provolone cheese
toasted
lettuce
onion
tomato
(extra) spinach
extra buffalo sauce
Italian B.M.T.
wheat bread
pepper jack cheese
untoasted
lettuce
tomato
onion
(extra) spinach
green bell peppers
sweet onion sauce
lite mayo
My love of Subway largely reflects Bummy's sentiments earlier in the thread; I like the amount of customization that Subway offers, something that most other sub restaurants don't. Even if a place like Planet Sub offers delicious sandwiches, if I'm looking for a highly specific sandwich (as sandwiches are indeed an art), Subway is the only location at which I can fully satisfy my lust.

lol, that was a bit over the top. I had a really shitty day at work and I guess I needed to rant a little.
Just to be clear though, getting upset because some dude asks you what you want on your sandwich is lame. Consider that in most cases the guy doesn't give a shit what you want on your sandwich, but is just asking you because that is a job requirement, and he could lose his job for not asking such dumb questions. I have had plenty of jobs when I was younger where I had to ask stupid annoying questions (would you like fires with that? Can I interest you in a (insert store here) credit card?) of customers because that is how management wanted it done. It's also kind of a given when you are talking about fast food.
