I'm one of those without power in NJ right now. I'm using my car along with a power inverter to power my laptop, and PDAnet to make my phone into a tethering modem. I hear we might be without power for a good while, probably as long as 2 weeks.

Needless to say, having no electricity kinda sucks, though I at least have a few resources to make it a little more bearable. The aforementioned commodities, some candles and a wood-burning stove. Oh and it's a good thing we have a gas stove which is still usable; you just need to light it yourself.

It really hasn't been that bad, at least not for us. The power outage is the only damage it's really done in our property.

One good thing out of this hurricane: I haven't had to go to work for a few days (there's no power at my job) so it's given me a long break at least, lol

Well, I have not been around much lately, first because of a move. Then, this hurricane came along and pretty much fucked up a lot of shit for me. The house I had purchased was unfortunately in a low lying coastal area, so I had several feet of water in my house, which pretty much completely destroyed it. The entire structure has to be demolished as it has been condemned. On top of that, I did not have flood insurance (was in the process of trying to get it when the storm hit). Thankfully, I did have insurance that covered a good amount of my personal effects, but money can't really replace the stuff I inherited from my father after he passed.

Here is a more detailed explanation of what happened during and in the aftermath of the hurricane in my life:

According to the town and the county I live in, the area where my house is (on a bay) was not supposed to be flooded, so I was planning to ride out the storm at home. I did set up a lot of sandbags just in case, but the water came up so fast, it was insane. We have barrier islands between the bay and the ocean that had huge dunes that ended up getting completely annihilated, which they had predicted would not happen. I had my car at the far end of my driveway, up near the road (which is at a higher elevation) with some emergency stuff packed in the trunk just in case, and I ended up SWIMMING out of my house and making it to my car and just drove off, in almost complete shock. It was very surreal watching so much of my stuff just floating around me as I was trying to get out of my house, not knowing if I was going to make it or not. I came real close to getting killed by my refrigerator, which I personally find kind of funny considering some of the things I have been through in my life.

On top of all of that insanity, my job site was also fucked up and is still without power, meaning no work for who knows how long. And sitting in gas lines for hours just to be able to drive to the places I have to get to in order to sort all of this out. They just started rationing gas here on Long Island today, I have yet to see if that has made a difference on the lines at the gas stations.

As of right now I am staying with a good friend, who has been awesome in helping me out so much. I really can't express how grateful I am to her. All I have left is my car, a duffel bag full of clothes and a notebook.

On a lighter note, another friend bought me a new xbox last week and I was able to recover my account and am going through the pain in the ass process of re-downloading all of my content (they really should make it easier, perhaps just some sort of automatic system where you check off everything you need and it just does it on its own). It's nice being able to sit down and just zone out and numb my mind after everything that has happened in the past couple of weeks.

So, how did everyone else in the storm's path fare? Hopefully better than I did.

@om*d, had you already paid off your house? I was under the impression that most mortgage companies would demand a flood insurance policy for at risk properties. Also, will any of the federal aid help you out?

I had completely paid off my house upon purchase and was in the process of trying to get flood insurance. The only thing I know about mortgage companies wanting flood insurance for at risk properties is from a friend of mine who recently purchased a home in another area nearby. He had to get flood insurance but having a pending application was all it took so seal the deal on the property.

I have applied for help through FEMA and I qualify for funding to replace(rebuild) my home, but it will not cover the total cost and I have not been given a timetable on how long I will have to wait for the money to come through. I have also applied for (temporary) unemployment to cover lost wages due to the damage and power outages at my work.

MY suggestion... move to Edmonton, AB... very minimal chances of a natural disaster happening here, its cold in the winter but we have a huge labor shortage. Friends of mine work up in the camps as cooks for some of the contract companies that run their kitchen and as cooks they make $4500/mo

Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!
