There is a lot going on that is leading us into the abyss. This is a thread to discuss our rapid acceleration into filth. You know the hedonism, depravity, poopy stuff.

One thing that rather upset me was Jimmy Kimmel's speech. Even Adam Carolla who bitched about how we shouldn't want to see the president become too casual did not address how crude and the lack of class Kimmel displayed in a white house correspondents dinner with the president. Here is my addressment of this event:

Quote:
Dear Mr. Kimmel,

The Death of Comedy

When the Vice President said “I promise you” it heightened the deadpan delivery of the rest of his declaration: “the President has a big stick”. (It sounded like an article from The Onion where the writer puts “he added” or “trust me” before injecting another funny statement into the story.) Nothing needed to be added or altered there. But you chose to anyway.

You have engaged in The Ritual of Transparency - stripping away the allusion by bleeping the word stick. You’ve brought the joke on stage and revealed its nakedness. You’ve left nothing to the imagination. It is now made to be deadly apparent. Lowering it to the lowest common denominator. In short: you’ve destroyed the joke. Taking something that was funny on its own and perverted it in an attempt to make it “that much more”. You’ve used up all the reserves, exhausted the essence, and thrown it to the garbage.

No more allure of innuendo. Now just blatant obscenity. Also, did you really think it was acceptable to show altered artwork of the President as if he has a comically enlarged penis that is being censored? A shameless act.

Your crude missteps show a total lack of awareness. An eviction of class - granted you never struck anyone as being a person possessing savoir faire. For a moment, we all experienced a mental unification into nullity. A tranquilization of stupor. An occlusion to the path of sensibility. But then we snapped out of it and realized that it was only our profound disillusionment of how crude and seemingly casual our society has become.

Next year maybe you can host again and use the ‘2 girls, 1 cup’ video for your opening bit. “It’s not really poop, Mr. President”.

No respect for comedy -- no comedic talent (that’s Carolla)
No respect for anything.

I’m afraid you still haven’t made it where it counts: earning my respect. Thanks for keeping it trashy.

Sincerely,

Vert1

I think it all went down hill when the President and Will Ferrell unilaterally agreed to make more cover shooters and dumb down the difficulty.

Into the abyss? Really? Do you have any idea how pretentious that makes you sound?

It may be the drugs talking, but none of that made any sense to me.

However, the comment "maybe you can use '2 girls 1 cup' as your introduction" made me laugh right out loud.

In regards to America becoming too casual, I'm not sure if that's what the problem really is. Certainly a lot of things have lower standards than they did, but I'm not sure if that's because of us becoming too casual or if it's because we've run out of original things to say and do. With the advent of modern technology, starting with the silent movie, people found ways to express their creativity in ways that 200 years ago no one would have dreamed possible. Then the radio came along later, with color and sound movies following close by. TV became a reality, then video games, then the home computer. And all of that in the space of about 100 years.

Now answer me this: where the fuck are we supposed to go now? In what direction should we take ourselves and our ideas? We're stagnating because we have ideas that can't be expressed in any current form of entertainment, and ideas that require a blend of two formats (movies and sound being a great example) simply cannot be with the devices we have now. Before, that wasn't the case. Every few years, some advancement in sound or visual equipment would allow us to take the next step.

Until the newest innovation comes about that allows us to express ourselves in a unique way, then culture will continue to degrade in the fashion it is now. I do NOT want to hear "we're becoming too casual" as an excuse for why things are going down the social toilet.

... If that had absolutely nothing to do with the problem at hand, I'm sorry. I can't focus right now and I'm not sure if it's all relevant.

I saw a Romney ad and an Obama ad back to back, each one saying the exact same thing about the other. Something about jobs. And people wonder why I hate politics.

I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

I like that he followed that up with "poopy stuff." Hard to take anything he writes seriously as it is, but "poopy stuff" makes it even more difficult to do so.

Well if you saw the white house correspondents dinner 2012 intro video, it would help you understand what I am writing about.

We've lowered our standards of decency in this country dramatically. If it's not casual ("seemingly casual"), it is apathy. The media has a lot to do with this and that's why I started off talking about Jimmy Kimmel. Perhaps he wanted to push the envelope with shock humor ("run out of things to do and say") which is a common theme with today's comedies. However, that is appropriate for R-rated movies, not fucking dinner with the President of the United States.

As for what the solution is, I want to keep it on a case by case basis. So, for the correspondents dinner the correct choice would have been to disallow Kimmel from presenting his opening bit instead of green lighting it. Since the damage has already done we're looking at a healing process. I don't know exactly what can be done besides shame Kimmel. That's what is missing in our society: shame.

The technology improvements factor into the degradation of social interactivity and such, but technology is not at fault here with what Kimmel did.

Sometimes I feel like I \know who Vert actually is. I probably don't, but he seriously reminds me of a friend I have (who knows about this place, though I doubt posts here). My friend actually is a pretty fun guy, but he can be windy with his opinions sometimes.

I see what you're saying now.

So the problem in your eyes, to be succinct, is that America as a whole is becoming too casual in terms of social behavior and decency.

In that case, my statement still stands; social behavior in a system like ours can largely be attributed to popular media. If a band that everyone listens to acts despicably, then it's more than likely going to rub off on the fans. But that's besides the point here.

And of course apathy is an issue. Every recent presidential election we've had is a standing monument to the problem of how little we really care. I don't think that's the larger issue at hand here. The problem is people who get offended at a loosening of the ties; in this case, you're offended that, whilst having dinner with the President, Jimmy Kimmel made a lewd joke and instead of being chided for his being inappropriate he actually received a bit of fanfare. A little applause. And so you jump on it and use it as an example to spearhead your opinion that America's manners are going down the tubes.

You're the worst kind of alarmist.

Goddamn connection timed out when I hit submit.

The whole thing was a "lewd" joke repeated over and over. Making a video clip of politicians into a barrage of phrases sounding like sex acts (i.e. sodomoy) and throwing in a faux censored penis image at a dinner event is not okay. It's beyond the simple inappropriate. It is unacceptable.

This deals with the serious subject of image control, of appearances. How we want the POTUS revered. The image that he portrays. What kind of imagery do we think should be displayed around or portray of said person. I hope it is not one where we don't respect the President enough to hold a standard of decency where Jimmy Kimmel's dick humor fails passing by unchecked.

As for the "loosening of the ties", I will repeat that I am simply starting off with Kimmel and have more to come. This stuff will be more social than politically charged.

I agree that Kimmel was rude. No argument there. I say that you sound pretentious because you blow it up into some greater statement about society's downfall. Jimmy Kimmel is an ass. He's always been an ass, and because of all the money he's making being an ass, he'll probably always be an ass. It doesn't mean that society is falling apart or something silly like that, because that's hardly a new concept in the American entertainment business.
