A new God of War game is officially on the way to PlayStation 3, and it's not God of War IV as many expected. After being teased by Sony over the last week, the surprise was spoiled prior to its proper announcement, first by the file name of an image on Sony's servers, and then by an Amazon listing revealing the latest entry in the series: God of War: Ascension.

God of War III was designed as the end of the trilogy. It was always made clear more games would be coming, though it's becoming increasingly clear Sony has no interest in leaving Kratos behind. The bald, ill-tempered (seriously -- he ripped a guy's head off and proceeded to use it as a flashlight) protagonist of every GoW game to date makes a return in Ascension, which will, like both of the series' PlayStation Portable games, be a prequel. You could be mistaken for thinking, "Again?" in response to hearing that detail: this is now the third prequel (or fourth if you count the mobile title Betrayal, though only Chains of Olympus and Ascension take place before the original game) to be released, meaning there are now more GoW prequels than sequels, which is a pretty peculiar place for a franchise to find itself. It's not as if the potential for God of War IV is not there; III ended on a cliffhanger that left open the door for Kratos to make his triumphant return in the inevitable GoW IV, though if that proves to be the case, Ascension will likely take the edge off of his "return."

Ascension goes back to the days before Kratos became the God of War. Although a trailer has been released, the temporary box art above is the only clear shot of Kratos we've gotten. That's because there was no gameplay seen in the video, which featured the voice of the Titan Gaia talking about Kratos breaking an oath to an unjust god and a time before he was known as the Ghost of Sparta. The tagline "Before he was a God, he was a man" has been used to tease what will be happening in the game, making it sound as if this will be a more humanizing story than some of what's happened in the previous games as he "seeks freedom, redemption, and the clarity to avenge his family."

The bottom line is it all sounds a lot like what you would expect from a new God of War, at least as far as the story goes. Whether or not that is a good thing is very much a subjective matter; there were those already tired of Kratos and his struggles several games ago. This early tease shows, if nothing else, that those players will have to endure assuming the role of Kratos yet again.

Yawn. I still never even picked up GOW3.

I played the first one, and it was enjoyable for what it was, but anytime I tried any of the others, I wasn't really impressed.

I guess too much of the same, I dunno. I'm burnt out on the whole franchise.

Yeah I kind of enjoyed the first one, watched my brother play the second, and never played the third. Probably won't play this one either since I just played the very similar, gameplay-wise, Dante's Inferno.

I don't really give a single dang about GoW. In my oppinion it's mindlessly overrated.

They are all very badass. I bought a PS3 so I could play GoW3, then sold it. Gonna have to find someone with a PS3 to play this. Oh, and Dante's Inferno has pretty good visuals, but the gameplay is a bit clunky and the weapons are not that great.

Dante Inferno was a decent game. Didn't need to see penis, though.

God of War was hard to get into for me. I loved the first, but the others just annoyed me. I hated the fact that I controlled a violent little child who would mutilate anything in his path, and then blame all of his problems on Zeus.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

It's a pretty pretentious game for being that flat and uninovativ.

We're about to move this to the war thread. Maybe I'll just stay away from this one.

The game is not that bad, don't get me wrong. I finished the 2nd game and it was alright. Nothing special though. I think it's one of those games that are kept alive by the hype and by the hype only. I may be wrong though.

F all you haters. if you dont like it, thats cool. i love the series. the gameplay can be a bit repetitive, but the set pieces are fucking awesome & the story isnt all too bad.

I have to admit the opening scene and the first stage of GoW3 were pretty fucking awesome and epic. And i liked FF XIII so why should you care a single second about my opinion?

I love the series. I also like the games that I feel are similar to this series, such as Dante's Inferno and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Most gameplay is repetitive anyways, regardless of what game you are playing.

I will definitely be getting this game when it comes out.
