reuters:

The company plans to begin selling beer and wine in a small number of cafes in Atlanta and Southern California by the end of this year as it explores an expansion beyond morning coffee and afternoon pick-me-ups.

Starbucks is planning to add the alcoholic drinks and food such as savory snacks, cheese plates and hot flatbreads to menus in four to six outlets in each market.

The world's biggest coffee chain started selling such items at a neighborhood Seattle cafe in October 2010. Five stores in the Seattle area and one in Portland, Oregon, now offer the extended menu.

The company, which already has announced plans to bring the new items to five to seven Chicago-area cafes by the end of 2012, also is testing wine and beer sales in Spain.

"As our customers transition from work to home, many are looking for a warm and inviting place to unwind and connect with the people they care about," Clarice Turner, Starbucks' senior vice president of U.S. operations, said in a news release.

The company does not expect to sell alcohol in all of its nearly 11,000 U.S. cafes.

Quick-service restaurant chains in the United States are adding morning and late-night menus, extending food and drink options and lengthening operating hours in an effort to boost sales.

Starbucks, Burger King and Sonic are among the chains experimenting with alcohol sales in the United States.

Such efforts have their critics.

California-based industry watchdog Alcohol Justice has criticized alcohol sales by Starbucks and fast-food chain Burger King, which offers beer at its new Whopper Bar restaurants.

Sarah Mart, the group's director of research, said many U.S. neighborhoods already have plenty of bars, restaurants and stores that sell alcohol.

"The more places that open, the more risk there is of alcohol-related harm" such as underage drinking, Mart said.

==================

tl;dr Starbucks stores in Atlanta, Southern California, and Spain (as well as Sonic and Burger King) are looking into selling alcohol.

i remember reading about this a while ago ( http://current.com/community/90446025_starbucks-wipes-name-from-seattle-location.htm ) but they changed the stores names. i wonder if these stores will remain branded the same.

Starbucks beer would cost like 15 bucks a bottle (for some light bullshit), BK's beer would probably be cheap and make you throw up their greasy burgers and Sonic is a FUCKING HEDGEHOG.

It really isn't any wonder their sales are falling though, there are better places for coffee that are a lot cheaper, at least around here. I guess desperate times and all that. I wonder if they will only serve fancy wine and beer so they can charge too much for that too, or if they will serve PBR and cheap wine to appeal to one of their major demographics.

The thing that angers me the most about Starbucks is that they have the nerve to have a tip jar. You want me to pay over five bucks for my drink and still expect a tip? Fuck you.

The smoothie place I work at charges $4.04 for most of the 16oz smoothies, and like above $5 for a 24oz and, dammit we still want a tip!
... Seriously, minimum wage is like $7.25 in Utah.

:/ I wish there was a computer store or something in my town I could work at

The thing is, in most states, servers in restaurants make less than minimum wage and they actually serve you the food. At Starbucks, they pour shit into a cup and they don't even bring it to you. You still have to stand there and wait for it. Starbucks employees are pretty low on the tip hierarchy.

The few times I've been to Starbucks I've never tipped, because it just doesn't seem like a tip is necessary there. It isn't like it is a restaurant where they have to actually work to get your order and keep your drinks filled or whatever. I don't tip at McDonald's, so why should I tip at Starbucks which is basically fast food too? Not to mention they never put enough vanilla flavor in to cover up the taste of the coffee. It really isn't that hard to make a french vanilla coffee taste like french vanilla, because I manage it at home just fine. I generally try to avoid going there though, and usually only go if someone else drags me there and pays for it.

Minimum wage for people who actually serve food is $2.38.

So quit whining.

Let's back off Hack, guys. Working minimum wage and getting shafted on tips DOES suck. How and when and where you tip is no business of anyone's but yours, but there's nothing wrong with saying "working for minimum wage sucks, and I wish people tipped since we give them the opportunity." I share those exact sentiments at this particular juncture in my--ahem--"career."

On topic, I could see buying alcohol from Sonic or Starbucks (I guess) but BK? Ugh, no food has ever made me feel LESS like a beer.

McDonald's has served Beer in Europe for quite a while... I drink beer with just about everything... it's not just for breakfast anymore as they say!
However I assume in the US you have laws that you must be old enough to buy alcohol to be able to sell it, so maybe that'll cut down on some of the loser teenagers working these kind of places who can't let go of their damn cellphones for 2 minutes

LOL Starbucks?! Tipping?! What!?

The reason Starbucks coffees price is so high is because it's fair trade. The tipping thing doesn't exist here because we pay our workers their wages and don't have a stupid "dependent on tips system".

I probably have not explained that well, you do tip but that's cause they did a good job and not because it's socially demanded that you do or little Jimmy is going to lose his jobs.

I don't understand why legislation doesn't exist which demands a reasonable minimum wage to be paid or should i say consistent - wherever you work you deserve minimum wage - hence the fucking term minimum wage. Fuck lots of people here live on minimum wage or slightly above minimum - like 20-50p above it and they get along fine. I don't know what the hell is going on with you guys.

I think there should be a rule that if you all you buy is a Burger King Kid's Meal and either a Long Island Ice Tea or a Hard Lemonade, they have to alert the authorities.

I don't know about the rest of you, but when I try to drink after eating fast food, all I do is get heavily bloated. Never works out too well.

Warn them that I'm about to party, that is.

Totally agree. I love a beer with grilled burgers, but fast food and alcohol is ugh.

There are tons of BK Whopper bars here in Beijing now, one is like 5-10 minute walk down the street, I'll have to check and see if they serve beer there. The cool thing about being a tourist type here is that the food is mostly awesome, usually cheap compared to American food, and if you're into fast food it's without question tastier and better presented (ie: not smashed up, missing ingredient, looks mostly like the picture).

Oh yeah, back on topic, there's no tax on anything and you almost never tip, but some nicer places add a 10% service charge to your bill or something like that. That's pretty damn sweet for a Western barbarian such as myself, unless of course you're a waitress or waiter. No minimum wage is a bitch. But, I'm not a Chinese waiter, so uh, no harm no foul! I agree with Alow, stupid American tipping thing is dumb, we gotta stop that crap and just bump up the wages.

Good day!
