Yeah that article even links to this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_extradition_treaties
That one states that NZ is actually one of the countries we have an extradition treaty with. So it isn't like anything illegal went down on our end, we followed diplomatic procedure and let NZ handle the arrests of known fugitives. Pretty cut and dry.

I just went to MegaUpload and I saw a notice saying that its owners were arrested and the site shut down for conspiracy to commit money laundering and racketeering as well as two counts of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement. Getting mad that a bad thing disappears is funny to me in a cosmic sense, especially after I got an activist e-mail telling me to get angry that MegaUpload was shut down because the government wanted to give us the middle finger (their words) after SOPA was canned.

Pretty much this. Plus I know for a fact that many of our allied nations have mutual agreements with the US to allow for wanted felons to be extradited. I'm not even sure why we are arguing this, these guys committed some pretty serious crimes they deserve everything they get. |
Because this is the internet and it gets a collective rage boner everytime someone gets in trouble for anything.

Which is amusing to me. If you ask me, the Administration timed this thing specifically to make a point that piracy laws can be enforced without SOPA. Sort of the opposite of what the email suggests.

Exactly. It pissed me off so much that I unsubscribed for probably the fifth time and made sure to say that correlation is not causation, just not in as many words.

What's not amusing (and even somewhat irritating) about a lot of people who talk about SOPA is that they keep saying things like that. That "the government" wanted to give people the finger because it didn't pass.
It didn't pass BECAUSE of the government, dipshits. They're the ones who didn't pass it. There is no "the government" on this issue, because the White House was against it, The House was afraid to touch it, and a handful of Senators were the only one trying to push it. It's not a single, unified thing, and the people who shut down Megaupload were the very same people that helped insure that SOPA wasn't going to pass.
It's called separation of powers. If you're so worried about your freedoms, try reading the fucking Constitution for a change. Then maybe you'll actually know what they are.

Also, stop trying to blame America for this, people. A great many multinational companies with headquarters in other countries wanted this act to pass, and spent a great deal of money trying to get it to pass.

Guys my ethernet cable came unplugged without me noticing and I couldn't get the forums to load. Now I don't wanna say that the Government definitely secretly broke into my dorm and unplugged it to make a point, but I think we can all agree that the timing is a little suspicious.

I've been hearing a lot all over the internet about another internet-changing bill called ACTA, which unlike SOPA and PIPA is an international agreement. Some say SOPA and PIPA were a distraction to let this law slip through unnoticed. What really scares me is how the world governments are keeping hush-hush about it...
Anyone know about this?

ACTA is a treaty not a law. It keeps being revised, so it isn't easy to talk about. Additionally it was developed in secret and then sprung on the world.
It is still dangerous, but that is mainly because it is so unclear. Definitely needs to be watched, and it would be helpful if it could be fairly explained.
