As everyone knows, if Nintendo truly wants to succeed next generation then they are going to have to introduce a more serious and dedicated online network.

Apparently they are putting together the Nintendo Network to rival XBL and the PSN. Here is some info from nintendoenthusiast.com.

http://www.nintendoenthusiast.com/2012/01/21/rumour-roundup-nintendo-network-retro-2nd-team-wii-u-final-dev-kits-and-project-cars/

A never before seen icon has appeared on the box-art of Theatrythm: Final Fantasy. Clearly written in the upper right-hand corner is a logo with the words “Nintendo Network”. On the back of the box it says that the game will offer DLC, which apparently will be one of the functions of the new network. According to reports around the industry, the Nintendo Network will be the new network on the 3DS and the Wii U, somehow integrating and connecting the two systems. Screenshots show that already in some places around the world, Mario Kart 7 is running on this new network. So, apparently, multiplayer online gaming is confirmed as a part of the network, not just DLC. What new features will Nintendo Network offer and how will it unify the Wii U and 3DS? All this may be announced at the conference scheduled for January 26th. Next week. Last year, Nintendo announced new details about the 3DS at the very same conference, so we can expect some new details to be revealed again this year.

A source that wished to remain anonymous has told us that Nintendo will launch a website accessible from any web browser that will handle configuration of your Nintendo Network account for use on the Wii U or 3DS. He also stated that Nintendo Network will include many new features that haven’t been used before by Nintendo. According to his accounts: Nintendo Network = Sony PSN = Xbox Live.

I am excited for this, I have been waiting on a serious online Nintendo service for several years now. I hope they don't fuck this up badly.

Here is what the logo looks like.

I heard rumor that Valve was helping them with their online infrastructure, not entirely sure of the validity on that.

They will definitely be using a third party to help them out, though, thank god.

Please. Everybody in the entire universe knows that nintendo is the starter console. it's for 6 year old kids and people who struggle with more than 2 buttons...

(I must concede that TMNT on the NES is the second hardest game in the world. The first I hear you cry! It;s Xevious, also on the NES)

In all honesty, try to complete Xevious. I've been trying since 1986!

Ohhhh how about a nice big cup of SHUT THE FUCK UP?

Features TNN should have that WiiWare/DSiWare/3DS Shop does not:

1. Load times that aren't awful (the Wii Shop Channel in particular is notorious for this)
2. No limits on download sizes
3. Allow enhanced ports with online play
4. Return to the points purchase system, as opposed to the dollar-based system on the 3DS (due to sale tax).
5. NO MORE FUCKING FRIEND CODES
6. A better interface

As a non nintendo user (excluding the NES Gods own console!) I can't comment on nintendo online, however;

Opposite Day can also be declared retroactively to indicate that the opposite meaning of what was said should be inferred.

Maybe someone got me?

The new logo looks too much like the RSS logo to be a coincidence so I wonder what they're planning to do with that.

I agree with all those points. However, I would also like points to be the same value in all countries, regardless of currency differences. Basically, if 1000 points is worth $10 in the US, it should cost $10 in every other country, regardless of currency.

Also, voice and video chat would be great (the former being used in-game), as would profile customisation beyond your nickname, Mii and message thingy.

Another thing that could be good for later iterations of the 3DS would be a small app ecosystem, beyond games.

If anything, I would think it's EA that would be helping them out, what with the EA and Wii U partnership thing, but who knows.

Are you kidding me?? Saying something should cost $10 flat out everywhere, regardless of currency, shows very little economic knowledge. There is actual value to currency, you know, and so 10 US dollars is very different than 10 Euros or even 10 Canadian dollars now. Instead, there should be a more realistic conversion to the same value, not the same dollar amount. Using the 10 US dollars as a comparison, scale the price base on the value of that nation's currency.

EDIT: Just to prove my point, 10 US dollars is 9.54 AU dollars, 7.74 euros, 6.4 pounds, 10.14 Canadian dollars, etc.

How about somewhat of an MMORPG/Second Life- style game involving Yoshies?

Yea, I heard EA and Valve were apparently competing for the right to work out their online. I guess I would just prefer it to be Valve, lol.

Oh well, it looks like we will find out more on the 26th.

How about allowing personal greetings longer than 18 characters? That's plenty in Japanese but not enough for anything useful in any other language that matters.

I'm with Epic. The Nintendo Network should just be Xevious and TMNT, and a banner above that says "complete this shit, babies." They are both free.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

As long as they don't charge for it they can do whatever they want with it in my opinion. I'm already on the fence about buying the new system, if they were to pull a Microsoft and charge you on top of what you already pay for internet I'd definitely never buy a Wii U. Valve helping build it would be pretty awesome though, they seem to know their shit when it comes to online play.

Someone said it was free in IRC, but I haven't seen a source that says either way.
