Holy crap, I remember playing that game! Never got that far, though; anyone who knows me knows I suck at any game that isn't Elder Scrolls or Super Smash Bros. |
yup, second to last stage. after beating mojo:

How To Beat "Mojo's Crunch"
At the end of Mojo's Crunch, you will be in a room surrounded by tv screens with Prof. X's face on them. When the timer starts to run out, Prof. X will tell you to reset the computer. At this point press the RESET button on your Segas Genesis. You will see a screen that looks like binary code. After this fades out, You will then move on to the last level, Ateroid M. |

THIS was a dick move. Particularly if your reset button was broken.

Would Batman Arkham Asylum's piracy protection count?

I doubt it. It's not supposed to be experienced by the player, it's mostly designed to trip up pirates.
If we're counting that stuff though, Earthbound wins.

Well, the SNES version had a shitload of stuff: http://starmen.net/mother2/gameinfo/antipiracy/
And then there was NES English prototype of Earthbound Zero:
| Quote: |
| The English NES prototype of its predecessor MOTHER, dubbed EarthBound Zero by the fans, also had similar copy protection, but it's more mundane and far less cruel in its implementation. Instead of making the game impossible and scrubbing your save games at the end, it runs a checksum at certain points to test whether the game is pirated; if it is determined it is, it stops the game and throws up a screen saying that the game is an unauthorized copy and will not continue, and bricks the ROM/cart. This measure was part of a major headache in getting the ROM to work properly when it was first discovered and dumped in 1998, and owners of the actual physical prototypes are understandably concerned that the condition of the prototypes may set it off anyway. This protection wasn't in the Japanese version, nor does it exist in MOTHER 1+2 which is built upon the prototype data. |

Here's a good one: Super Ghouls and Ghosts having you go through the game twice.

Ape Escape 2 did something similar I think. It's been a while but I'm pretty sure after you beat Spectre, he runs away, then you have you catch like 125 more monkeys to go get him for good.

Castlevania's second time through wasn't the same as Super Ghouls n' Ghosts' second time through, though. All of Konami's older games automatically started you out on the game's hard mode after you beat it once, the Gradius games, the Castlevania games, the Contra series. Those were just that, though, hard modes, the ending to hard mode wasn't any different than the ending of the regular mode, so it wasn't like you /had/ to go through it a second time to get the game's ending. Super Ghouls n' Ghosts did exactly that, though, it wasn't an optional hard mode, it was just a "Fuck you, the game's not over yet, do it all over again if you want to see the ending."

Nope.
Castlevania 1 has one ending.
Castlevania 3 has four endings depending on which teammate (if any) you finish the game with.
Castlevania 2 has three endings, but they are based on the time taken to complete the game, not on number of run throughs.
#EDIT: Ah, I see Fernin has covered this. Yeah, you had to actually play through GnG and Super GnG twice to get the real ending. It sucked. A Hard Mode once you beat the game isn't the same. SMB1 had a hard mode too. All the Goombas were Buzzy Beetles and all elevators where minimum length. I think there may have been extra fire spinners too. I always disappointed SMB1 didn't have a third mode where all Goombas became Spinies. That would have been badass.

The end of Earthbound sucked anyway, as much as I loved the rest of it.

The boss fight music is cool, the gimmick to beat him is dumb. The ending is forgettable. Honestly the height of Earthbound for me was the Mr.Saturn village and the coffee break, and fighting the Krakken. The game was more of a parody about bad RPGs itself, and everything about it was successful in that regard except the ending; The end actually made it feel like it was trying to get serious and meaningful all of the sudden. Hell, I don't know, maybe it was supposed to be cringeworthy and stupid for citing your name, either way I didn't like it.

Actually, the game was meant to be a combination of serious and comical, though EarthBound has much more of the latter, while Mother 3 has much more of the former. Regardless, the game (and series) has a theme of love and friendship, and the ending fully shows it. I was actually taken by surprise when it called my name, and I thought it was a great way of truly involving the player. I think it's a fantastic ending, perhaps my favorite of any RPG. And being able to explore the world at your leisure afterwards is a great idea and something I'd like to see done more.

Heretic would kill you if you put in the Doom god mode code and took away your weapons if you put in the Doom weapons cheat.

In Hey You, Pikachu!, if you mentioned a Sega console or playstation, pikachu would get angry and start thundershocking stuff.
Aside: I witnessed this at the behest of a friend's younger brother. I have never owned nor played Hey You, Pikachu!

Oh my god your avatar. GRANDPA!!!!!! Freeze time so I can piss on my dinner!!!!
Yeah I saw a clip of the swamp shroom trip scene in mother 3, it was amazing. Not comical whatsoever, just really well done and harrowing.
I love how Giygas is so badass you have to be made into robots to withstand him. That part was awesome.
I still think the ending is a bunch of group prayer, hand-holding, hallelujah bullshit though . If only they had a SNES microphone that I was actually required to pray into, I would have enjoyed it a lot more.
