What the hell is the point? Pay that much for it, and what, put it on a shelf? I don't understand collectors.

Clearly you have never been in possession of a full set of something people care about.

untrue, I once owned every Pokemon card. This was back when the card game first came out and there weren't so many. But I was in seventh grade and was playing it competitively, so at least there was some utiity from it.
I truly want to know, what the hell will owning this do for you? I can only see two benefits: holding on to it to resell for a profit, or pulling a Monty Brewster and unboxing it to party like it's Christmas '85.

ROB is fucking garbage, why would anyone pay that much. It's seriously not even an icon of videogaming for me, it's an abomination.

ROB sucks. I think anyone who's ever owned one or watched a YouTube video of it in action should realize that. It's slow and ungodly loud.
But I still want one.

I don't think the price they're asking is reasonable. Yes, it's sealed, but deluxe sets aren't really that rare. Stadium Events is a very rare thing with only a handful of copies out there. There's a hundred thousand of these. It's not in perfect condition. And you don't even get Super Mario Bros.
Knock a zero off of it, and then maybe you have a fair price.

An unsealed set in that condition would probably go for about $500. So I'd say $5000 is fair for the sealed one.

I have the same sentiment, and it's why so many collections go bust after a big boom in popularity- "Okay, I have all the stuff- now what? Re-sell it for more? Read/play with it?" Everything stagnates, and nobody gives a shit, and the stuff you payed $1000 for two years ago is now next to worthless.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

I don't get it either. But let crazy people do crazy stuff with their money, I guess.

I collect video games myself, but only games I want to play which I feel makes sense. But there are still tons of games I get, play, and then never touch again, which feels kinda meaningless - so this blows my mind. Still, I really want to own a ROB, but I don't really know why.

I wonder if the R.O.B. can be repurposed for something cooler, like how Atari Jaguar system casings were used for dental cameras.

This seems like an insane price to me. Don't get me wrong, I've blown retarded sums of money on collectables before (specifically comic books and comic statues), but I can't even begin to imagine spending that kind of money on something that doesn't seem all that rare. I'm going to be shocked if this guy actually gets what he's asking.

See, that's the key thing. Even if it is sealed, even if it's the only sealed copy left on the planet, there's still 100,000 of them from the first one, about 500,000 of them with ROBs and tens of millions of NES systems, the average going rate for which is 40 bucks.
And unfortunately, people who collect video games don't want to keep them sealed up in boxes. They likely want the boxes and everything, but "sealed" isn't really worth more, if you ask me. Game collectors want to display their units, and play their games.
