2004 saw a good number of memorable releases across the various media. For instance, that year's three highest-grossing movies (Shrek 2, Spider-Man 2 and The Passion Of The Christ) all made it into the all-time top 10, though I'm sure at least one of them has been bumped off by now. It was also the year Lost, which developed quite a fanbase, myself not included, premiered on TV. And then, of course, there were the video games. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door absolutely improved on everything about the first game. Silent Hill 4: The Room delightfully deviated from the franchise's formula, though it was also the point at which said franchise hit a wall. Metroid: Zero Mission made everything the original game could've been a (virtual) reality. And then there was the launch of the Nintendo DS, though it wouldn't grow legs for a couple of years. But there's one release from that year, on this day, that truly stands out to me, not simply for being something I'd have loved regardless, but also for being years ahead of its time, marred only, to date, by its lack of a follow-up, despite the subsequent release of a certain two titles. I speak, of course, of the PlayStation 2 classic, Mega Man X8.

Featuring innovative mechanics and a story with some real kick to it, Mega Man X8 truly made my Christmas that year. Metals, Double Attacks, Guard Breaks, Desperation Moves, and the re-return of Vile (which I thought would've happened in X5) came together to put the luscious topping on would already have been, for me, the latest in a long line of rapturous gaming experiences. Incidentally, this is the only game in the series where I don't feel compelled to get absolutely everything; collecting Rare Metals just doesn't have the same sense of urgency as saving endangered Reploids whether they have anything or not. Also, it's such a shame that I didn't get around to playing as the navigators until last year.

With each passing Mega Man X9-less year, it's becoming increasingly apparent that the series truly did end the same way the Dr. Wily's Revenge series did ten years prior: By not having the main villain as the final boss. It has now been longer than the period between the western releases of Mega Man 8 and Mega Man & Bass. So if that does remain the case, then here's to you, Mega Man X8, for giving a great sendoff to a great series, my own personal insatiability notwithstanding.

I read that X5 was supposed to be the end of the series and Kenji Inafune was mad when he learned that X6 was produced. I wouldn't put it past Capcom to go to X9 without him, but if they do, I want them to do it X1 style.

I was under the impression they were phasing Megaman out. Maybe it's just because of him not appearing on MvC3 and the cancelled Universe game, but I've heard a lot of people say that online. I don't actually /know/ anything about it though.

They're just being farty because there hasn't been a Mega Man release this year.

I would love to see them make a new X-game more similar to the original Mega Man X. Or even better, start a new Mega Man-franchise on the 3DS so that we can have something to look forward to there. Its been far too long since Mega Man ZX Advent!

I have only played the first four games in the Mega Man X series. The first three, which appear on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, are some of my all-time favorites; an inspection of my YouTube channel will quickly verify that.

However, when I played Mega Man X4 a few years back, while the core gameplay values were still evident, there was something about the style change that I was not very receptive about. Zero becoming a full-fledged character was certainly nice, seeing as he was quite gimped in X3. However, the newer characters and the plot itself were extremely uninteresting to me.

X1's entire plot is based on the classic uprising of the underestimated badass approach. It works extremely well given the setting, and it's likely why X1 is typically quoted as the series favorite. X2 and X3's plots aren't nearly as memorable, but they don't distract from the gameplay.

X4 struck me as something similar to the Sonic the Hedgehog issue where multiple characters that I don't care about were tacked on, which was distracting to me. Also, I didn't enjoy the music as much. If X5-8 and a potential X9 are anything like X4, I'm not interested.

You bore me, Preng: If the X series ever comes back, base it off the Super Nintendo Entertainment System style.

Capcom probably has to pay Inafune royalties to use Mega Man, so they probably refuse to use him out of spite.

I love the Mega Man X franchise, but I think it's time to let it die. The problem with releasing it classic style is that I've already played the classic style. I played it 5 times. And on top of that, I'd hate to encourage Capcom's already bad habit of regressing whenever they can't think of anything new.

If they make an X9 they need to transition it into the Zero series.

Speaking of which, I just finished the Zero Collection.

[SPOILER:f1f649fcf6]Did I miss something, or did they barely ever show Neo Arcadia's human population? They made such a big deal out of them, but I don't recall seeing any of them personally. I would like X9 to show the signs leading to Neo Arcadia's construction if it should come to that. Maybe I could care about it more.[/SPOILER:f1f649fcf6]

I need to find a copy of ZX.

The Zero series actually takes place in an alternate timeline, starting at Zero's ending in X6.
