So people were basically just handing out their account name and password to give free games to friends? It seems like this is something they would have gotten to sooner.

Or you could have had 5 friends get together, one person buys a game then the rest get it and so on.

Why not tie it to a sign in. If you are signed in one place, it can't be used in another... like STEAM.

The username can't be used simultaneously, I don't know if that's what you mean.

If that is the case, then what the fuck do they care how many units people register?

Because people were doing what's been mentioned in this thread: buying a game and then sharing it with four friends. I don't know the details on how it worked, but it worked. When PS3's userbase was severely lagging behind the 360's, Sony was forced to be nice. Now that they have caught up, the time for nice is over.

I don't understand... if you have a physical game, you share it by handing it over. Only one person can play at a time. If you have a sign in, only one person can activate a game session at a time per device. Where is the loophole?

GPF, you'll have to ask Douche or Andrew Man, because I don't know, but there was some sort of loophole. I think you only needed to sign into the account to RE-DOWNLOAD the game, not to actually play it. So I think the way it worked was that the account could download the game to five devices, and then it could be played on those five devices regardless of whether or not the account was signed in.

Pretty much what Syd said.
I buy a game, and have 4 friends log into my account and download it for themselves, then log off my account back into theirs.
Vice versa for their stuff.

I was just bluffing.
GPF: If I buy a game it goes into my downloaded items. I give someone my sign in information they go to the store and download my files to their system. They sign out the files continue to download they install it and they play the game I bought. These aren't DRM protected. There are only a handful of games that won't let you play them if you AREN'T signed in, and they are all Capcom games.
Think of the iTunes store. You can buy a song, and put it on multiple iPods, but not unlimited iPods.
