Why and how is Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time not an RPG?

Well if you like at the time when OoT came out, RPGs were usually defined by the following.:

Numbered HP/MP system

Experience Points

Numbered stats for the character or equipment

A party

I mean, Resident Evil 4 has more statistics for weapons and such than OoT. Is it an RPG? I don't think so.

I think it's subjective, and people can call it whatever they want. I consider it an action/adventure game with very small RPG elements.

Love those games, but they are not RPGs. If they were, so would SoTN, and it would be on the top of my list. Definitely a platformer. |

They're action/RPGs, as is Symphony of the Night.

Basically, this. I consider an RPG (or at least any other genre/RPG) to be any game in which you gain experience points in order to level up/grow stronger, with said experience points being garnered via fighting and/or defeating opponents. The only Zelda game in which that happens is Zelda II.

I think a role playing game should have more character interaction, as in conversations with townfolk/quests/missions whatever. If it does not contain something along those lines, I don't really consider it a RPG. Just my personal opinion.

My opinion is that it is an rpg if two conditions are met. First, if it is an important part of the game that your character grows stronger throughout the game. This however, does not have to be only by fighting enemies and leveling up as Cameron states, it can also be by exploring and finding, lets say, heart pieces. In this understanding, The Legend of Zelda-series would also be an rpg-series. What most Zelda-games lack however, and which is the other important characteristics of an rpg, is customization. And that is why I would agree that most Zelda-games are not really rpgs, but adventure-games with rpg- and action-elements. However, if what Nintendo has said about Skyward Sword is correct, than I will probably consider that one an action-rpg as you will have much more variety in equipment, giving you quite a bit of that customization.

This definition would also say that games that are extremely similar

to that Zelda-experience, like Illusion of Gaia, are not really rpg-s, as the customization is almost non-existant there, and I think that you can also question a game like Secret of Mana by the same reasoning. While on the other hand, games that are not usually considered rpgs, like the Yakuza-games, goes as rpgs by this definition, and I think that is really what those games are.

Maybe I should have called the thread 'Top ten non-action RPGs' . I'm unsure as to confirm that the folllowing are RPGs..

Secret of Mana....about 60% RPG

Crystalis.....about 45% RPG

Soulblazer.....about 40% RPG

Illusion of Gaia....about 40% RPG

Any Zelda game.....about 25% RPG

Mega Man III.... about -50% RPG

All games with RPG elements, but only to various degrees.

(I really just pulled those percentages out of my ass so, don't ask)
