O.o Seriously? I dunno, Square Enix literally announced this like 15 minutes ago and I saw it on their live stream of their "special announcement event."

| So, not only is the Wii getting one more huge game -- it's getting a huge online game. Series creator Yuji Horii introduced the first trailer for Dragon Quest X tonight at a reveal event, which culminated in a logo for "Dragon Quest X Online." Horii called it an "online RPG," which could refer either to an MMO-style game or a game in which a few players join up into small parties. |
The dude just said "MMO" and "RPG" a bunch of times on the stream, so I'm guessing that's what it is. LOL! I did also hear him say Wii U a bunch of times, haven't seen any articles with info on the translation yet though.
Your thoughts?

Not interested. How many here still play Monster Hunter Tri?

I never got around to start MH3 (have a copy of it though), but I will definitely get this. Seems to me like the game is a more like a single player game with a huge online component than a real mmo. Anyways, it shows that Nintendo is serious about their online now, when such a huge title becomes a flagship online title.

I'm getting a PSO vibe from this and I liked PSO. It's my hope against hope that this game offers some degree of solo play like PSO did as well. I'm also hoping this game will avoid any sort of Twilight Princess syndrome; I don't plan on getting a Wii U yet so I'm hoping the US gets a Wii version released.
On another note, maybe it's just me but Square Enix seems to be getting awfully buddy-buddy with Nintendo for their advertising. I've regularly been getting e-mails from Nintendo plugging the latest DQ stuff. To say nothing of being able to get Club Nintendo coins for DQ IX, Joker 2 (currently with an Intend to Buy bonus),

If the game is localized, it will almost definitely be done by Nintendo, the way DQ9 was. Apparently Enix is happy with this deal, as they want the game in the west, but they don't want to assume the financial risks, since DQ has not been especially successful in the west since DQ1.
There are conflicting reports as to just how much of MMORPG this is. Some are saying the multiplayer will be optional, others are saying fullblown MMORPG.
And yes, the game has been confirmed for both Wii and Wii U. This means, however, that American audiences might only see it on the Wii U. The game will have a subscription fee in Japan, much like Monster Hunter Tri did. And much like MHT, it is unlikely the North American version would have such fees.
There will also be some sort of connectivity where you can beam certain game data to your 3DS and then Street Pass with other players.

im not sure i like the whole online deal... heres what 1up.com has on this:

We learned a lot about Dragon Quest X on Sunday night, including the fact that it has a significant online component. After the game's official website went live, a mention of an undetermined "usage fee" (in addition to the usual price) made it sound as if there would be a subscription required to play online. As it turns out, that's absolutely correct -- at least in Japan.
A new FAQ entry on Square Enix's Japanese support site (via Andriasang) solidifies what was believed to be the case: there will indeed be an additional fee if you decide to connect to the Internet.
Not that you have much choice in the matter, as another entry states that only the "first few hours" can be played offline. After that, much of the game takes place online, so you'll have to pay the usage fee in order to access most of the game's content.
However, as noted yesterday, the fee may only apply for gamers in Japan. Like Dragon Quest IX, DQX seems to be taking cues from Monster Hunter Tri, which has a monthly fee to play online in Japan. Those in Europe or North America are exempt from that fee, and we end up seeing a similar situation with DQX where most of the world isn't charged to play online.
DQX isn't expected out in Japan until sometime in 2012, with an international release presumably coming some months after that. In the meantime, hopefully we'll get a better idea of how much the subscription will cost and another screenshot so we don't have to continue looking at nothing but the one above. |

I guarantee the subscription fee will be waived in North America, if we get the game. The brand isn't popular enough to warrant a subscription fee.

Following on from the annoucement of Dragon Quest X as an online title at a press conference last week, weekly Japanese magazine Shounen Jump has provided some more details about Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Online. While players create characters that interact in an online world, Square Enix has so far avoided using the term "MMORPG" to describe Dragon Quest X.
Players will be able to create a character as one of five races: Ogres, Elves, Dwarves, Pukuripo and Wedi. There is a sixth race, humans, but it is currently unclear if they will be playable. Dragon Quest X takes place on the world of Astoldia, which features four continents and an island chain inhabited by the five playable races. The story will involve a mysterious central continent, implied to be the lands where humans dwell.
More details are rumoured to be on the way during the upcoming Tokyo Game Show. Dragon Quest X is currently scheduled for a 2012 release on the Nintendo Wii in Japan.

I like how "...for Wii" is tacked onto this thread title like it's a big surprise. We've known for like 3 years that this was going to be a Wii title. Hell, we knew there was going to be DQ on the Wii before we knew there was going to one on the DS.

From rpgamer:
Like many other entries in the venerable Dragon Quest franchise, Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Online will be using a job system. At the start of the game, players will be able to choose from one of six different jobs. These are the Warrior, Priest, Mage, Martial Artist, Thief, and Minstrel, which is the same set of starting jobs that is available in Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. Much like that game, Dragon Quest X will also feature a skill point system that lets players choose how to develop their characters.
As with every Dragon Quest game with a job system, Dragon Quest X will let players change classes. This will once again involve a trip to temples dedicated to that task, though this time around they will have branches in every town rather than a single location. Based on precedent it is likely that the game will have advanced classes in addition to the basic ones listed above, but they have not been announced so far.

Another update from rpgamer
Square Enix has provided RPGamers with more information about the party component of the upcoming Dragon Quest X, as well as the AI support character system. Players will be able to choose between joining up with other live players around the world or utilizing the AI controlled support characters.
Those who wish to join up with other live players will have to first speak to their intended party member. Both the character's status and a set profile message will be seen before the choice is made whether or not to invite a player to the group. When a player is invited to join a party they will be able to set how long they wish to be involved, with the inviter able to reject them if they feel the time is not appropriate.
The game will also provide some useful features that may assist in group play, such as the ability to automatically follow another member. Players will also be able to do 'support' actions that will raise the tension of a party, giving them an advantage in battle, even if the player doing the support action is not actually a party member.
Those who either do not wish to play with others, or who require some extra manpower to fill the party ranks, will be able to add AI characters to their group. AI characters can be recruited at the pub, and will follow in the traditional Dragon Quest line, with their battle commands being executed automatically depending on the strategies set. Players will also be allowed to turn themselves into AI support characters, able to be recruited into other players' parties. Upon returning to the game, a report of the activites undertaken as support character will be given, and the experience earned as a support character will be kept.
Square Enix also showed off some of the monsters that players will meet in Dragon Quest X. New additions include 'Big Hat', a pig in a rather large sombrero, and the menacing insect, 'Green Scissor'. There are also a number of monsters that will be familiar to experienced Dragon Quest players. Dragon Quest X is due to be released on the Wii in Japan in 2012, with a WiiU release not yet dated.

And a new trailer, confirming the Japanese launch on August 2nd.
The more I see, the more I think I'll be dropping out (assuming it gets a Wii release over here). My Wii's online hasn't worked in months for some reason but it can thankfully still play games.

Of course this will sell like hotcakes in Japan at least, I'm just not interested. That hasn't happened for me with a Dragon Quest game in ever.

Josh, what do you not like about it? It looks like any other Dragon Quest game, except slightly prettier.

Maybe it's the fact that, as an MMO, it'll have no definitive conclusion like the nine before it.

I've read that it requires online play to complete the game. That simply just doesn't interest me.
Maybe the fee to play online will be waived in North America and maybe not. Hell, we don't even know if it's getting released here at all. I can almost guarantee it won't be released for both Wii and Wii U in North America, I'm betting we'll get one or the other.

My guess is that we'd get the Wii version, to attempt to bring the game to the larger audience.
