pretty neat article about the dolphin emulator. some of the pics look fucking badass
| Quote: |
Started in the year of Wind Waker's release, the Dolphin emulator began as a small two-man project that could only boot the GameCube Action Replay disc. Eight years later it's grown into an open source project supporting both the GameCube and Wii with more than 60 contributors and nearly two dozen active developers. But more importantly, Dolphin stepped into the next generation of technology Nintendo has been slow to embrace. While the Wii remains locked into outputting video at the sub-HD resolution of 480p, Dolphin can run games at double or even triple their native resolutions, bringing out the stunning art design muddied or obscured when stretched across a giant 1080p television.
Through Dolphin and PlayStation 2 emulator PCSX2, games like Wind Waker and Dragon Quest 8 have gotten a second chance to shine and reach new audiences enamored with the best art in gaming. By contacting some of Dolphin's developers and spending a few too many hours drooling over Zelda's Windfall Island, I've pieced together the nuts and bolts of how overclocked CPUs, anisotropic filtering and hacks galore make these games look so damn good. And if eye candy's all you're after, our gallery of Wind Waker, Metroid Other M, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Donkey Kong Country Returns is worth a look. |

Stuff like this pisses me off, because pirates use it to rationalize stealing brand new games. I hope they get their penises and/or clitorises cut off.

People who make new Metroid games that don't live up to the standards of past Metroid games should suffer that fate. People who steal such shitty games should be pitied.

You know what happens when a Metroid game doesn't sell well? Nintendo assumes no one cares about Metroid anymore and stops hiring devs to make new ones.

Look, if these guys can make an emulator do this but Nintendo can't make the Wii U upscale Gamecube or Wii games, that is really, really fucking depressing no matter which way you look at it.
I don't care about HD but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be a possibility for the people who do.
And yeah, the emulator can't read discs, it only reads ISO files. So the fact that 1UP is all "wheee piracy" makes me wanna stab people.
ALSO, I hate knocking on The Other M so much because it's such standard fair, but I don't believe that, Syd. I think almost everyones complaints about the game involved "I was hoping for a deeper, better looking Super Metroid" or "This makes me miss the Prime series". At worst it will make it so Team Ninja doesn't get involved in other franchises and make a game average that should be more so.

Do we know the Wii U can't upscale this stuff? Well, I mean, I know it can't play GCN games.
And Josh, you're right. But GPF baited me, so I baited him. But I think it's to both Nintendo's and Retro Studios' credit that they didn't just keep cranking out Prime games and let someone else try something new with the franchise. They were fun, but there's only so much you can do with that. Other M was fun as well, perhaps less so, and it obviously wasn't what a lot of people wanted from Metroid. I think with the success of DKC Returns, maybe we could see Retro get the green light to actually make a Super Metroid style game.

I was just teasing back. One ridiculous reaction required another. I actually agree that poor Metroid sales might make Nintendo reduce the number of games in the series. Sadly, all they need to do is make a 3D graphics 2D platformer with Super Metroid in mind. People will go apeshit over that.

And let me point out that there are legal alternatives between buying a game like Other M at MSRP to play it and flat out stealing it. Most famously, there's GameFly. And if that's too much work for you, Redbox launched 21,000 video game rental consoles on June 17th.

Sure, the emulator can output better graphics than real hardware, but just look at the cost of the hardware needed on the part of the user to get them at a good framerate. Would the potential cost increase in console parts be worth it?
Also, a friend of mine got an Other M ISO and remapped the controls so that he could use the analog sticks to control the first-person segments and not need the remote pointer at all. He said it made the game better, but not that much better.
Also also, Redbox's selection of games is a joke. Mine have about three games each, one for each console.

Well, they're still in the testing phase. I imagine their ultimate goal would be to have separate consoles for DVDs and games, so as not to compromise the selection of either. If that's not their goal, they're doomed to fail at video game rentals. Clearly, the current low selection is a result of Redbox not wanting to cut into their already lucrative DVD rentals.

They probably won't separate consoles, instead they'll add additional boxes in the area. Instead of carrying 15 copies of new releases at each one, they'll carry 10 and 5 more games. That sort of thing. Also, movies will decline once they get their streaming working.

Actually, you can use original Wii/GC game discs, but only on certain PC DVD drives for some reason:
I think you could copy your original discs and just use the copies to play in the emulator. Nothing illegal about that.
I personally support stuff like this emulator, but do not support piracy.

I don't emulate current games for the reasons that Syd mentioned. That said, there's no reason I should have had to dole out the money for copies of Chrono Trigger or Castlevania: SoN before they were re-released. At a certain point, the price for those games was collector value, and not reflective of any profit tot he actual company making them.

Honestly, I see no problem with emulation of older games. If I'm gonna play SMB3 legally, I'm gonna play it on an NES. If my NES cart breaks, I'm gonna buy one on eBay. So it's not like I'm taking money out of Nintrndo's pocket by emulating.

Not to mention, Nintedo is lazy and won't export a bunch of its games. Emulating was the only reason I ever got to play Sword of Seals and Mother 3
