I hate to say that I have not played a single one of these, just recently picking up the first Etrian Odyssey game.

5. Knights in the Nightmare
4. Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
3. Radiant Historia
2. Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes
1. The World Ends With You

I wish Dragon Quest IX had made their list, but the core game was relatively easy.

I'm 90% certain Rocket Slime isn't an RPG.

Whoa, I can't believe people are so about The World Ends With You. I just couldn't really get into it at all.

Knights in the Nightmare is interesting though.

I'd think they'd have at least one of the SMT games

What non-tactical SMT games are on the DS (Thinking of Devil Summoner here)?

Strange Journey is more of the old SMT games like the ones on SNES.

The World Ends With You definitely is a great game and deserves to be on a top 5 list. Clash of Heroes, while it too is a great game, isn't really an RPG at all. Also, the list is null and void because it doesn't include either of the Mario RPGs that are both brilliant games.

I'd say Bowser's Inside Story should have made it. Partners In Time could be annoying sometimes.

The Golden Sun games are ok, and its nice that they have some Zelda-like puzzles in them, but they are in no way good enough to feature on lists like these imo.

The list is a bit surprising, but I guess that is what you get when you exclude remakes.

I saw Knights in the Nightmare featured on Extra Credits on The Escapist a while ago and have been meaning to pick it up.

Have you even played them all the way through? The story is usually (if not always) better than the stories of the games on this list, along with a fighting system that puts them all to shame. Don't even get me started.

I'm going to get you started. Wink On the fighting system. All I got out of it was generic turn-based JRPG combat... how does that put anything to shame?
They're nice games, from most standpoints, but the battles are just nothing special.

Eh. I shouldn't have said any of that in the first place, twas a bad time for me when I was in this thread. I understand it's a matter of opinion, so I guess I have no room to talk right now.

That having been said, what I meant by the fighting style was the whole use of Djinn. That's not an element you'll find in most RPG's, and brings a whole new twist to the game. In my opinion.

I'll shut up now.

I have completed the first two, and I like them well enough. The main problems I have with them is that they are extremely wordy and not really that challenging. Also the ridiculously deep Djinn-system is awesome - in theory. In practice the game favours just stacking the same type of djinn on the different characters, which ruins the point of it a bit imo. So as I said, they are good, although somewhat flawed, games. I have not completed the third one yet (its on my shelf).

Wordy isn't really a fair criticism. An RPG should have a good story.

Not true. While you can get powerful Psynergy from stacking the same Djinn on their respective Adepts, if you mix and match them to see what you get, you usually end up getting something outlandish and freakishly strong. I never personally deviated from having Venus Djinn on Venus Adepts and the like, but that's because I'm lazy.

If I misunderstood your comment, I'm sorry.

Yeah, but you don't have to let dialogue get in the way of narrative. I'm not one of those types that constantly parrot out "BE LIKE SILENT HILL 2 AND HALF LIFE 2 BRRRAAWWK," but sometimes a game should follow the "do, don't tell" form of storytelling. One of the reasons I fall out with lots of JRPG's (and quite a few WRPG's as well) are the long dialogues/cut-scenes/journal entries that just overload you with too much information or exposition, forgetting that it's supposed to be a game. I've just started getting into Atlus' and Team Ico's games lately, and I'm impressed by how much of a story they can tell without characters constantly vomiting out every single thought and observation that comes to mind.

I seriously loved The World Ends With You.

I bought it right before I deployed a couple of years ago and couldn't put it down once I started.
