Does anyone of the older set remember this game? It was a fantastic game developed by the founders of id Software and released in 1991.

It was ugly, but it was definitely colorful and had more character than Wolfenstein which was released a year later. I also dig the setting a lot more than drab Nazi basements.

Anyways, did anyone else play the hell out of this?

I have not. I have played Catacomb Abyss though, which was developed by Softdisk, the publishers of the original game. Of the original Id Software team, only Adrian Carmack is credited as having worked on it.

Catacomb Abyss followed popular software of the time, where it was the shareware episode of a larger game, in this case the Catacomb Fantasy Trilogy. I have never played the installments you had to pay for, Catacomb Armageddon or Catacomb Apocalypse.

Catacomb Abyss was hella fun though. I always felt like Heretic/Hexen was the spiritual successor to these games.

Oh absolutely, I probably played Catacomb Abyss a little bit more than this one, I just had a wave of nostalgia for this original one.

I might have to break it out again and give it a whirl, I haven't played all the way through the original or any of the sequels in probably like 17 or 18 years.

But yeah, they are all fantastic.

Catacomb Abyss should certainly be able to find easily and legally. The other installments you should be able to find almost as easily, but far less legally.

Go for Catacomb Abyss, it's a little more fun and polished.
