What is Free-to-Play?

Free-to-Play games are available to download for free and can be played without a subscription or a credit card. Your Steam wallet allows you to purchase items and content in-game to customize your gameplay.

Will I need a credit card to play?

No, there are no upfront obligations to download and play Free-to-Play games, however you will need a supported payment method to fund your Steam Wallet if you wish to purchase items or content for the game.

Will I need to fund my Steam Wallet?

If you wish to purchase in-game items or content, you will need to fund your Steam Wallet. Please see the Steam Wallet FAQ for more information.

Will my Free-to-Play account have limitations or restrictions?

Any Steam Account that does not own a purchased game or have a funded Steam Wallet is considered a "Limited User." We have chosen to limit access to some community features as a means of protecting our customers from those who abuse Steam merely for purposes such as spamming and phishing. For more information, click here.

Individual Free-to-Play games may choose to place limitations on accounts. Please see the respective games Steam Store page for more information.

Will I still be able to play and enjoy my game without buying items from the store?

You are absolutely under no obligation to purchase anything from the Steam Store in order to play and progress through these games.

What happens if I need technical support help but I only have a Free-to-Play account?

Technical support for in-game issues is provided by the respective game's Support department. For instructions on how to contact various Support departments, Click Here. For billing issues or issues launching the game, please contact Steam Support.

Not sure who to contact? Please Click Here to help determine who can best assist you.

Champions Online: Free for All and Forsaken World both look interesting to me. Have any of you played these games yet? Are you thinking about it? Which ones?

I played Perfect World before, that is another game by the company that makes Forsaken World. This game is the companies newest title. The game that I've played is pretty well put together for a free mmorpg, but I'd say it highly favors the people who do spend money. So if you wanted to be competitive in pvp elements, id say cash is needed. But Forsaken World being newer, maybe it isn't as corrupted yet.

This seems like a stab at attracting new customers, I think you can play these games free from the source as well.

I am almost certain that all of these games were free to play, and then became Steam Free to Play.

The integration to Steam means that micro-transactions can be done using a Steam account. Additionally they can add things such as achievements and other SteamWorks features.

Champions Online isn't bad for a free MMO and it's always fun creating a superhero character. It's worth a few hours.

Champions Online so far has allowed me to do two things I wasnt't able to do in City of Heroes: Put my dragon character in a speedo and pound the ever living crap of a thug with a car.

If you pay for one month with Champions, can you create a pay character that you can then convert to a non-pay account?

From the Champions Online Forums:

Can you have both Gold and Silver characters on the same account?

Destra: Yes, in the current plan it is possible.

The key is that Gold Characters can only be accessed while the account is in Gold Status. Meaning, you'll have to be subscribed to access your Gold characters. If the subscription lapses, you'll only have access to your Silver characters.

There are plans to make it possible to convert Gold characters to Silver Characters, but the details are still being worked out. |

A lot of games that were originally P2P only tend to do this, such as Dungeons and Dragons Online (although you can technically buy everything separate instead of getting a P2P account on DDO, but it's much more expensive than a monthly fee).

Q: I canceled my Champions Online subscription, but I'm interested in becoming a Silver Player. Will I have the same access to the game as I did previously?

Your heroes are still available, but they may not use Gold features. To play them as a Silver Player, you will need to convert them before playing.

Q: If I decide to downgrade from Gold to Silver, what happens to all my stuff?

Characters will remain when switching from Gold to Silver. However, players will not be able to play them until either they re-upgrade to Gold or convert them individually into Silver characters in-game. Please note that we never delete character data. If a Gold Member cancels his or her subscription and decides to restart it at a later date, all of that Member's characters and associated items will be intact. |

However, if you just want something in particular you just don't have to subcribe; just buy it separately from the store:

Q: What's in the C-Store?

The C-Store features all kinds of experiential enhancements for you to enjoy, but aren’t critical to the gameplay experience. You can purchase new costume options, special devices, name change tokens, new adventures and so on. What you choose to purchase is entirely up to you, so you can tailor the game to play how you want. You can view a catalog of items currently available for purchase online here or inside the Champions Online game. |
