It doesn't matter what they want to call the new Nintendo console, I will still refer to it as Nintendo. As in, "I am playing Nintendo."

I'd give Nintendo a B at best. I'd give Sony an A-.

Alright time for postive notes:

-Skyrim wasn't really on my radar, but the gameplay demonstration just seems to sum up what I've always wanted in a fantasy game.

Bioshock Infinite looks like the return of creative single-player shooters. Bioshock 1, for all of the well-deserved praise it got, felt oddly restrained in the gameplay, but Infinite just looks like a creative mind just got plugged in to a computer and was allowed to run free.

This

Skyrim I would have no interest in were it not for the fact that the engine created for it will be the one used in the next Fallout.

As for BSI, I am so excited for it. It looks to take the story writing that I loved from Bioshock and fuse it with the gameplay I wish had. The free fall, multistory gameplay looks phenomenal, and the array of abilities it looks to kick a lot of ass. I love the new setting, I love the color, I love the representation of turn of the century US ideological turmoil....it just looks like a wet dream of a game for me.

Ghost Recon: The game itself doesn't really interest me, but seeing what Kinect can do for non-party-games is pretty cool.

Far Cry 3: Crytek seems like one of those companies that can understand problems with their games and are willing to fix them. Gameplay looks more fluid, hectic, and open-ended than ever, and the monologue delivered in the gameplay video makes it look like a modern shooter is actually going to have a cool villain for once.

Keeping wary about Sonic Generations, but it's showing more and more promise over time.

Wow, apparently I'm not the only one hating on the new Brothers in Arms based on the idea alone. Every news site I see is stuffed with comments just ripping it apart for selling it out to be a cash-in on Borderlands with a setting ripped off of Inglourious Basterds, while there's maybe one or two comments to the effect of "Cool! It's like a mix of Borderlands and Inglourious Basterds!" The only reason I can see them making this change is that they assume that audiences are tired of serious World War 2 games, but it feels just as disingenuous if you blatantly rip from other sources to insert the features into a WW2 game series that was the closest the medium has ever come to taking war, PTSD, and real-world violence seriously.

Shit sounds more original than Modern Battlefield Combat of Honor 5, at least by your description.

There's a rumor going around that Vita will be region-free. While that would be yet another point against the 3DS if true and the potential buyers are all rightfully high-fiving each other out of this announcement, it sickens me that none of them seem to understand why region-locking is done in the first place. It's not like region-locking is anything new or that they do it just to spite us.

I don't really care either way because I don't pirate my DS or import games, but I'd like to know why it's done. Making sure only pirates get to play foreign games doesn't look like too good an idea IMO.

I don't care too much because to be frank, I wouldn't miss most of what the whiny importer demographic drools over if I can't play them legally, short of the games that aren't language heavy like most of the shmups I play. If I wanted them that badly, I would either modify my system--like everyone else did two generations ago--or learn the language. I get why people would oppose region-locking on principle (that reason being that they have no business experience whatsoever), but the people who do complain are overreacting way too loud, especially those who can't even read Japanese. Can you think of even one Western game that the Japanese wanted to play but couldn't due to region-locking?

To help third party publishers? To boost sales of foreign hardware? Licensing problems? What's the advantage of region-locking exactly?

Region locking may become irrelevant, due to DLC.

A few months after Aksys announced it would not be localizing Cave's region-locked Deathsmiles 2X, Cave made a deal to put the untranslated game on Xbox Games On Demand. Similarly, Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ got a physical release on the DS in North America/Japan, and was later released as DSiWare in Europe.

The only real advantage of region-locking is to mark those grubby ingrates who don't deserve to play games they can't enjoy in the first place. There are plenty of good business reasons to region-lock like you said, but try telling that to fans who are convinced that their favorite video game companies hate them. I don't like region-locking myself, but I respect why it's done for the most part. It's not like they decide, "Hey, Americans suck, let's not take their money."

Sorry, I was thinking more regarding our version has more blood and gore than the Japanese release, not being unable to play the game period.

Catherine wasn't on my radar. But mixed with what I've heard about Atlus' games and some of the videos I've seen, I'm really interested now.
