With one console already set to be unveiled at this year's E3, the successor to another is reportedly already in the hands of at least one developer. A source has told Develop that Electronic Arts has an early version of the next Xbox at its offices.

In its current form, the hardware is encased in a PC shell, though that's not indicative of the final product. "Quite often when new consoles come around they?re packaged into a PC shell, but actually what's inside is an entirely new console," said the source, who is described as "senior, trusted, well-placed" but not employed at either Electronic Arts or Microsoft. He or she offered up no specifics about the hardware but suggested it'll be available by the end of 2012 and could be announced in some capacity at E3 next month.

Another to a different source, an E3 reveal is "highly unlikely," according to Eurogamer. |

I think it is funny that a computer is packaged as a computer instead of a console and people think that is odd. What the hell do people think consoles are? They are computers with very specific software.

				yup. totally fake:

| Update: EA's Jeff Brown denies reports that it has the successor to the Xbox 360. "This story is a total fabrication -- 100 percent not true," he told Kotaku. That's a fairly emphatic denial. Even if it weren't, it seems unlikely we'll be hearing anything about Microsoft's next console for at least another year with Kinect having launched only seven months ago. |

http://www.1up.com/news/xbox-36-successor-already-eas-hands
im curious as to what microsoft would bring to the table. would it have motion sensing included from the get go, or it would still be an add on? would they worry about bigger & better like last time, or would they focus on something else? and finally, what would they call their system?

Fuck Kinect, it was a piece of shit unless you had games for it, and even then it was hard to use. FUCKING MICROSOFT AND THEIR SHITTY ADD ONS

In all seriousness, I really didn't enjoy it too much. Its use is too specific to be enjoyed properly.

The 360 is still going strong. I can't imagine Microsoft being dumb enough to divide its still-massive fanbase with a new console at this point.

Kinect has a slew of problems. If you try and use Netflix with Kinect, it'll suggest that you use the controller. Repeatedly.

I love my 360, but Kinect is not for me. Its motion control is a step backwards from the Wii. And a lot of the games it's getting are rip-offs or rehashes of old Wii games. You can play Carnival Games on your 360 now! Great, except that Carnival Games is crap.

Hey man I really like my 360, but I wasn't stupid enough to buy a Kinect, shit I barely like the Wii's motion control, and I did buy a Wii. 2 Points for Nintendo. Hardware ain't shit with out decent software to run on it.

I find it strange that most people think Nintendo is long overdue for a new console, when at the same time they think that its too early for MS and Sony, while Nintendo still sells the most consoles worldwide. If Nintendo who sells the most consoles is ready to move on, so should probably MS and Sony be.

I don't think it's too early for Microsoft to have a new console, necessarily.

But MS sold a shitload of Kinects last holiday season, so they most likely see no reason to think about a new console quite yet.

Sony will absolutely be the last company to launch a new console.

I would imagine that most peripherals that work on the current systems will continue to work on the next one. Connections into the systems are no longer proprietary, they use USB. So drivers would be needed, and thats about it. Since the platform owners are also the accessory owners, it is an easy task. Allow games and peripherals to be ported via emulation and drivers, and make the switch easy.

If the Wii were up to par with 360 and PS3 graphic wise then your statement would make a lot more sense. In this day an age when you can't afford a mistep, being the first mover to newer technology is extremely risky. Chances are highly likely that Sony and Microsoft are looking at what Nintendo comes out with to set the bar for the next innovations they plan to include.

This isn't to say that they are not working on new systems, because they obviously are, but the trick is to peak in sales, ride that until you see a steady decline then come out with a new one. Nintendo's sales are dipping, not because they are "out of style" but because just about everyone who wants one has one. PS3 is surprisingly the highest selling console as of right now.

That's because it has lowest install base. It's easy to make sales when no one has what you're selling.

Microsoft was first to market last generation, and that was a huge advantage to them over Sony. But now, the 360 is starting to show its age. Its graphic capability isn't up to bar with the PS3, nor is the disc space. And in a market where giant sandbox games filled with long ass cutscenes are becoming increasingly popular, the 360 is very soon going to be unable to handle games that the PS3 can handle. Hell, MGS4 was a PS3 launch title and the 360 wouldn't be able to run it without huge sacrifices being made. That, or it would be on like 4 discs. And the days of multiple disc gaming are over.

EDIT: They're actually not. LA Noire on the 360: 3 discs, LA Noire on PS3: 1 disc.

So the most hyped game of the year is going to be a pain in the ass to play on the 360.

i wouldnt call it a pain in the ass to switch between 3 discs. inconvenient, yes. but not a pain in the ass.

buying a game and then not being able to play it cuz your network is down, now thats a pain in the ass.

and the wii might get a small boost in sales w/that price drop they are getting soon. not a big one, cuz everyone and their mother has one, but still get a boost nonetheless

Well, it's more wantable now than ever before. It's a reasonably priced Blu Ray, and a game system.

Additional RAM, CPU/GPU speed would definitely help the 3-5 year old consoles.

What I don't understand is that if the interface works, and the games are good... why not introduce an upgrade rather than an entire new system. Something that can continue to support what people already have, but have more power for new stuff. I feel like the Wii and DS lines have been good about this.

Looking back, it's amazing how long the NES held on. There were better looking arcade games out by the time it launched, but it was a fairly viable system up through 1993, two years after the SNES launch.

Everyone seems to think this and it is wrong.

New console systems are sold for a loss until the hardware costs drop several years later.

Profits are made on software and accessory sales.

The only monetary advantage that a new console has is hype for marketing purposes.
