So I was looking at upcoming Wii releases, and saw Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes. It was released in America back in October and totally slipped under my radar. It sold well enough in Japan that it is being re-released in June in that region as Best Price title, which what finally brought it to my attention. Has anyone played this? Is it any good?

Sorry, I'm only familiar with the anime they made off it.

Oh, it's a version of the Sengoku Basara for the PS3.
I only have the first two games to go by, seeing as I've never played anything beyond the PS2 games, but this should be a good buy, IF you like Dynasty Warriors games. Personally, I thought it was better than the DW games, because you can really feel the difference when leveling up, as opposed to just causing a bit more damage and taking a bit less damage. But that won't help if you aren't a fan of mowing down hundreds and hundreds of soldiers every stage Smile

I own it for the PS3 and i have mixed feelings for it. The whole game is very much like the Samurai Warriors/Devil Kings games but with some changes, wich are:

Gameplay:
The worked on that and made it slightly better.
It plays a little bit more fluid and the expanded it a bit.
Overall it's pretty much the same, you got Normal Attack, Special Attack (wich is usally chained with a Normal Attack),
Defend, Dodge and the Basara Attack. They added the Secret Skills wich are like beefed down Basara Attack's you can always use.
The strongly vary from player to player, for instance Oichi can deal damage to a crowd of 30 enemys and heal itself buy draining their energy,
Nobunaga switches into a super demone mode wich drains his health and Mitsunari deals massive damage
to one enemy (wich comes in handy when fighting a general).
Every player has 3 of those Secret Skills wich start at level 1 to max of 3 and as mentioned before, the vary strongly from player to player wich individualizes the character rooster a bit.
You also have the Hero Mode wich is like Bullett Time plus a strength boost Overall, the gameplay is better. Not much but it is.

Presentation:
The game roots in the Devil King games so expected something different if you never played one of the games.
It moves the whole series in a more anime-esque place, wich suits the game fairly well.
Honda is a giant lighting bolt shooting flying robot who fights with a drill spear,
Nobunaga is the friggin' Anti-Christ wielding a shotgun and a blade,
Oichi fights with a demon that possess her and so on.
It's not as realistic has Samurai Warriors but it works well.
They also tried to make it a little more humerous with some funny dialogues. The dialogues i think are much better then in the Samurai Warrior games, though still cheesy.

Content:
You have two modes.
Story Mode and Quick Play. Thats all.
You can spend your time unlocking the secret characters,
wich doesn't take too long, completing the story's of every single character, maxing out the states, collecting new weapons.
What got me motivated the most is unlocking the ally generals (the general that fights along with you in battle
and grants you some special benefits, for instance elemental boost) because the games has 96 ally generals to unlock
wich takes about 100 hours to get all of them i think. Overall,
this game sucks at content and this is probably the main reason to not buy it because besides fighting on the
battlefield and unlocking a couple of things, this game has not much to offer. It also has only 16 characters wich
is not much compared to the
other games and some very famous are missing like Hideyoshi, Shingen and Mitsuhide (wich was my favorite Character).

Graphics & Music:
No surprises.
The Graphic is nothing special but good enough, from a scael from 1 to 10 it would deserve a 6.
The music is alright,
at some points it sucks but to my surprise
there are a few good songs on the game too. Probably a 5.

If i look at it as a fan of ther Series (wich i'am)
i would give it a 9 out of 10 because
they managed to get the gameplay better,
the style is very good if you ask me,
some new characters kick ass like Mitsunari, some stages are really cool and creativ.
As a fan, to only thing wich could annoy you is the content,
i know those games are repetitive as shit
wich is cool to me but adding only two modes still sucks.
The story-mode is kinda good though
and every character has 4 roads to choose wich adds some variety to the game.
Objectivly (whatever that means), i would give it ... maybe a 6 out of 10.
