Yo, in the beginning, am I supposed to like run outside the town walls and fight bugs for XP and flee if I encounter anything larger than them until I level up? So far everytime I enter the shitty medusa cave every moron in town tells me about I get killed by slimes....

You know what else was really difficult? The original Dragon Warrior. Go in the wrong direction and suddenly you're getting random encounters of enemies 20 levels higher than you.

How was that hard? Just don't cross those damn bridges, and when you have to, stay close to them to have an easier time getting the fuck away if it was the wrong one.

I own Phantasy Star 2 but I've never really gotten that far into it. The game just never really 'grabbed' me. Probably because I didn't get it until years later and had already played numerous RPGs by then. I didn't like Dragon Warrior at all but I still finished it, which is weird I know.

No I totally understand what you mean, I got sick of it's simplistic beeping and gridntastic crap and started playing Shining Force 1, which I'm sure I'll like because I loved SFII.

I'll slog my way through it at some point, but yeah, it definitely didn't wow me right off the bat.

I think I may harbor some ill will towards Phantasy Star as a franchise due to an ex back in the day insisting I buy it for the Dreamcast and neither of us realizing it was an online game. Being too poor to afford internets at that time and getting tired of playing by ourselves we ended up selling it at a significant loss to a friend. Actually now I think about it that was around the time everything went to shit... DAMN YOU PHANTASY STAR!!!

I have a Genesis, who recommends Shining Force over Phantasy Star? Never played Shining Force.

				seconded!

shining force rocks & the graphics are better. not that graphics make a game better, but they are easier to get immersed in vs those of phantasy star

Also, Shining Force is actually a good game.

But for some reason I like SF 1 more than SF 2... I don't know, maybe because 1 was the first i played, and there is all that nostalgia factor...

I think I feel the same way about Breath of Fire 1 over 2. I owned BoF 1 shortly after it came out so I was a teenager when I finished it. I played BoF2 only once back then but never bought it because the only copy I could find was like 70 fuckin dollars. So I thought I'd wait it out till the price went down, but that never happened back then. So before too long the SNES market went dry and it was all about the Playstation. So I finally got a copy of BoF2 a couple years ago but couldn't find myself liking it as much as the original.

That is weird...That would be like someone liking Lufia 1 more than Lufia 2. Don't get me wrong I love all four games, but the sequels made the first ones seem so dated. The only game I like the first one over ANY sequel is Suikoden, but Suikoden II is damn close.

I'll have to play Lufia 2 eventually as well. I played the first one a long time ago but never owned it so I never got that far into it. But first things first. I'm gonna see if I can get into Phantasy Star 2 and finish it this time. Then I'll put Lufia, Suikoden, Shining Force, and Grandia all on my list of RPG's to try someday. If I can only find the time...

Yeah the Phantasy Star games ARE very grind heavy, this is really old school RPG design at play. You will spend hours on hours just fighting and you real have to stick close to home at first. I never solved any of them, while I spend many hours on them, there was never anything that hooked me enough to drive me to finish them.

Grinding I don't really mind too much. As long as the game play itself is good and I find a character I like to build up. The story in PS2 is kind of interesting. We'll see if it keeps me interested till the end.

Yeah... the original was pretty retarded for grinding... and come to think of it, the whole thing was kind of "meh", but then again, I played it for the first time in like, 2002.

I have Phantasy Star Portable and haven't had to grind once yet. I guess they learned.

Sorry about the serious BUMP, however I've been trying to find the damn muera leaves on that island in Phantasy Star 2. I just keep seeming to wander around aimlessly with no success. Anyone have any hints?
