Yea I'm not sure why he'd be a fan of Helloween and Gamma Ray, but dislike Edguy. They're quite similar to my ear. Granted I like Helloween and Gamma Ray better, but I wouldn't call Edguy "fruity power metal."

I've recently started listening to Amon Amarth as well. Thus far I'm liking them.

I'm a big Iron Maiden fan, and a fan of Megadeth. I like Metallica's music, but I hate them as people.

What are your thoughts on Loudness? I know this is kind of weird asking this, but I never hear them get mentioned, so I don't know what anybody else thinks about them. Alot of the early stuff was hairband style, but some songs were pretty good. Recently they've tried out Heavy Metal/Thrash with the album "Racing".

Some examples:

Good Early Stuff:

SDI

Clockwork Toy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hY_9HuLrRI

Rock Shock

Soldier of Fortune
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B92FJPZkfdc

In the Mirror *
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgDbZQtUUB4
*Sounds weird because the lyrics were originally in japanese.

Newer Stuff:

Exultation

Lunatic

You can't take shit because of your extremely delayed reaction to this. Laughing Besides, I bet there's a few hundred people out there who would revoke yours for not liking Slayer (as critical as I am of them).

I kinda want to dissavow this list. How the fuck did I a) leave Morbid Angel, Dissection and Saxon off the list all together, b) put Immortal so low on the middle tier c) put the snorefest that is Isis above the far superior Cynic?

I don't enjoy most Slayer, but I recognize their importance and I respect what they've accomplished. They're just not really for me.

And yeah, Saxon is awesome.

I will say that I'd rather listen to tier 10 over tiers' 9, 11, 12, 13 and most of the stuff in 8.

Also if anything is salvageable from this experiment, I'd say...this:

[Hard Rock] bands are a bit more digestable, and therefore acceptable by the mainstream. You’ve probably had the conversation with someone where you tell them you like heavy metal, and then the other person says, “oh that’s cool, I like Zeppelin, AC/DC, etc.” This basically says to the metal fan “I like the sound of heavy rock music, but I’m way too cool to be caught listening to Slayer, so I’ll just stick with the pedestrian stuff.” For whatever reason, these bands just aren’t that “metal” in the eyes of the true fans (not necessarily the TMP). Not saying that these aren’t great bands, but they just not metal.

These lists are completely ridiculous.

I fail to see the need to heap a whole bunch of arbitrary bands from seperate, reasonable, established and coherent genres which have existed for over twenty years, into vague categories like "extreme".

The fact that you have listed Mayhem tells me that these lists are nothing more than an attempt to cast a kind of limelight on what you apparently think is some sort of cosmic wealth of knowledge regarding metal, and make yourself look hardcore. Mayhem are a terrible band, comprised of absolute maniacs whos music admittedly serves no other purpose than to facilitate the fact that these men are deeply disturbed individuals, who want nothing else but attention to further thier misanthropic obsession. If the ranking and placement of bands on these lists requires any sort of musical validity, which I would expect of a list concerning a particular style of music I cannot comprehend why in fuck Mayhem are on it.

Similarly, I find myself revisiting the JonSnow Face Contortion in attempts to try and understand why you have included Nine Inch Nails. NIN have never been a metal band, they know they aren't a metal band, and they're not trying to be a metal band. Listing them under "Gay Eyeliner Shit" doesn't make you look tough, cool, or more metal, it makes you look like some kind of human phenomenon who has managed to dedicate his existence on this Earth to the definition of ignorance. If you'd any kind of real knowledge about even half of the stuff you've listed here, you'd have probably known that Trent Reznor (the mind behind NIN, just in-case) used to be a fairly weedy man due to his penchant for certain chemicals, but as of around 5 years ago the man has instead substituted his drug addictions for personal training, and now looks more like a slightly pasty Zangief. If you ever decide to speak your mind to Trent, you might want to inform Cannibal Corpse so that they can use the bloody event to draw inspiration for new song titles.

In keeping with the theme you have so concretely established, your "Middle Tier List" is such a blatantly opinionated, uninformed, and again, phenominally ignorant collection of shit which you have somehow used to form words, that I have to stop and focus on stopping my head from shaking in utter diesbelief so vehemently that I am approached and asked if I have Parkinsons Disease. I would risk jail time for armed robbery in an effort to fund a trip across the ocean JUST to see the look on the face of anyone actually involved with the metal industry, that you fucking said that to. Fuck, my JonSnow face would look like Johnny Depp in comparison.

Your top tier extreme bands is a list so entirely dated that not only is the use of the term extreme so extremely slothfull and vauge, but in todays standard it boarders on innacurate. You've done almost nothing but list old household names that the average 13 year old toe-dipper knew 10 - 20 years ago. Yes, these bands are excellent, but they're classics and dont reflect the current status quo of the bands who will be, if not already are considered modern classics in terms of quality, ability and yes, extremity. Where are these bands not only pushing, but fucking obliterating the envelope? Meshuggah, Nile, Anata, Origin, Psycroptic, Decapitated, The Faceless, Gojira, Necrophagist, Neuraxis, Beneath The Massacre.. these bands are nowehere to be seen on your apparently definitive list.

Opeth are a band that are simply "in the now" ? They were creating music far more similar to, and plainly influenced by, their peers' in their earlier days than they are now. They rose to where they are now through growing and progressing as a band. As a dedicated group of artists genuinely interested in developing themselves, their abilities, and the style of music that they love. Whats "in the now" is a bunch of dickheads who rely on media marketing and mainstream industry propaganda for information, who knew Opeth weren't as popular as they are now, suddenly deciding to say "Oh, if lots of people like them now, I dont anymore and I'm going to rip on them"

I scincerely hope that there arent many other metal fans around here. I wouldent wish the brainache this list has inflicted upon me, upon an other living thing. Even if it was a member of Mayhem.

Oh, you have vanquished me sir. How on Earth did you know that my one and only weakness was a susceptibility to the cheap, backhanded, rhetorically suggested insults of obviously embarrassed individuals without a straw to grasp at?

While I'll leave the grudge for you to hold, I will simply suggest you do a little more headwork before deciding to lay claim to any outstanding -or at the very least legitimate- reason for preaching some kind of self professed depth of understanding on the same, or any other matter. On this thing called the internet, you're likely to find people who actually DO know a thing or two about what you're pretending to be an authority of.

You can call me as self righteous as you like. The fact is, that I'm willing to admit the breadth and limit of my knowledge at any given point. There are people who would put my comprehension of metal under the fucking microscope in comparison to their own. Thats life on a planet with an enormous population. I guess I'm just one of those people that not only finds value in actually dedicating time to the study and message of something, but also trying to further my own knowledge, before jumping out and attempting to educate others.

There is no need to stage that sort of pathetic attack on me for pointing out that you've got some homework to do before you start pretending to have a PHD.

Judas Priest represent for me the side of metal that i hate.

Motorhead aren't great as well...

Killed By Death is an abomination, so much so that the title doesn't even make sense.

Honestly to me Motorhead are one of those bands who have like 3 good songs and the rest all sound the same.

With Judas Priest... well it's hard to explain... hate's a strong word about it, i just don't really listen to it.

Take Breaking the Law for an example. It's just awful.

Repeatedly saying "BREAKING THE LAW, BREAKING THE LAW" is a shit chorus. The production is awful, the music isn't good or even memorable.

They are one of those bands that i would put on at a party and everyone would laugh and then do mock "power fists" while laughing shouting breaking the law. It's just a total spoof.

Breaking the Law is fun, but I completely understand why you feel the way you do about the song, and honestly when I hear too much praise about British Steel and too short of a period of time, I'll pretty much think the same thing you do.

If you want to hear some examples of why people really love Priest, check out the following

Exciter
Between The Hammer & The Anvil
Jawbreaker
Beyond The Realms of Death
Genocide (live from Unleashed In The East)
Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver
Screaming For Vengeance
Blood Red Skies
Battle Hymn/One Shot At Glory
Call For The Priest/ Let Us Prey

RATM sucks. I don't like to say that bands suck, because who am I to criticize aesthetics that other people enjoy, but RATM flatout sucks. Sixth grade Michael Moore politics mixed with pedestrian riffs? Pass.

Incubus, I always found really boring. The only bands more I've found more boring than Incubus are 311, The Eagles of Death Metal, and Queens of the Stone Age.

RATM has cool music, Tom's a good guitarist, but I don't care for the lyrics. 311 has a few good songs, but a lot of it's meh.

Yeah, I like RATM's music quite. I just don't like the vocal portion of the music. I have the same feelings toward a lot of Death Metal, actually.

As JRA said you should check out some more Priest. British Steel doesn't even come close to giving you the full picture of them.

You should check out the Sad Wings of Destiny, Defenders of the Faith, Ram it Down and Painkiller albums. Different sounds on each, but all kickass. There are also good songs on Priest's most recent (post Ripper) albums, Angel of Retribution and Nostradamus.

Specific songs in addition to those JRA mentioned:
--The Ripper
--Tyrant
--Freewheel Burning
--Jawbreaker
--The Sentinel
--Ram it Down
--Hard as Iron
--Painkiller
--Nightcrawler
--Judas Rising
--Loch Ness
--Plague and Pestilence

Iron Maiden should be at the top.
In Flames should be higher up.
Dimmu Borgir should be present.

A7X and KSE are awesome. Surprised you didn't put All That Remains (which are pretty good), Bullet for My Valentine (decent), and As I Lay Dying (blech) in the same tier.

Mastodon way higher up.
High on Fire further down .

Not surprised you put Slipknot at the bottom even though they're awesome. V3:SV and AHIG are both great albums.

Motorhead should be below Dio. Mercyful Fate shouldn't be in the same tier, because... really? MF is pretty good but I don't know anyone else that likes them, and most people I know have never heard of them.
