Everyone's already familiar with Auto Tune and its capabilities of turning even the grittiest of voices into a melodious enchantment.

However, the question is: Are you familiar with Songsmith? If not, let the awesome Microsoft Marketing Department tell you about it:

If you haven't shot yourself after watching the video, what Songsmith does is add "matching music" to your voice, so you don't have to worry about knowing how to write music. In other words, you can improvise karaoke.

People of course have found better ways to use the software however by changing well known songs and using Songsmith to add the music. Of all examples available, perhaps the most hilarious one is Queen to Salsa Music:

Demo's available online if you feel like playing around yourself, but regardless, this begs the following question:

What if you used Auto Tune along with Songsmith? Would it be like dividing by zero?

I would like to see someone here use one of those speech synthesizer sites, auto-tune it and add the songsmith. Considering the kind of music people seem to like these days, we will make MILLIONS!

God forbid somebody picks up a guitar or piano and learns how to play. Fuck that. Here's the program where as long as you have some understanding of basic chord progressions, which 95% of the people using it still won't, you can express yourself to your I-IV-V freely, like a bag of crap blowing in the wind, because what I want is for people to be able to write senseless lyrics over substandard accompaniment with the greatest of ease.

The bag of shit just gets heavier and heavier. I'm gonna need more rope...

RIP Hacker.

Haha, perfectly said. I wish this forum had the ability to "like" or thumbs up a post.

And it is all I-IV-V shit.

I'm sorry, but I think it's great that all of this terrible music is being shoveled out and creating horrible groups and artists that sell. By sell, of course, I mean digitally and in concert tickets, because let's face it, albums don't sell for shit anymore. I think Katy Perry's at number 1 on the BIllboard charts right now with 280,000 copies in two weeks? Ten years ago, she wouldn't have even charted, but I digress.

Why is it good? Because it's radically going to alienate more and more people who aren't total feebs for the [corporate (mostly Disney) backed] pop stars, new country musicians and other schmoes and they're going to demand a return to quality. That means more local/smaller groups and ones that can actually play will start doing better. Of course, then the big corps are going to try and get a piece of them, and lather rinse repeat.

Maybe that's just my take, though. It's got to get better, right? They can't all just be Ke$has in waiting.

Who likes role-playing games? Me. Way too goddamn much.

Probably not, music is dead and good music will never be in the "mainstream" again.

Why is a Microsoft Research product pushed as "shareware"?

What a 1990's approach to a software release.

If Microsoft wants to sell it, don't put a 6 hour window on it, instead make two versions, one that can save, and one that can't.
