I personally fucking love SNL, but I hear a lot of people flaming it 24/7, however some of the sketches aren't funny at all, and some of the music guests suck. What does everyone else think?

Also isn't there another SNL thread asking the same thing?

I can't really say if it's funny because I haven't watched consistantly in about 12 years. From what I've seen, I'd have to say no. The people who really killed the show for me were the people they almost tried to force onto me like Will Ferrell. Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey, all of which were mediocre at best. Honestly, I think the show was best during the 90's and my favorite peak moment was when Steve Forbes hosted, after that other political celebs started showing up, but his was one of my favorites.

SNL hasn't been funny in decades.

Also, polls are lame.

It's only saving grace is that it is not Mad TV.

i'll give it a slight benefit of the doubt, but I agree... it hasn't been truly funny since maybe the early nineties.

Absolutely not. The best sketch on modern SNL episodes is worse than the worst sketch on any season of Kids in the Hall.

1993–1994 season was the best ever, and it has gone downhill ever since.

Since then, there have been maybe 1 or 2 stand out stars per season. But in 93-94 almost every cast member was excellent:

Ellen Cleghorne
Chris Farley
Phil Hartman
Melanie Hutsell
Michael McKean
Tim Meadows
Mike Myers
Kevin Nealon
Adam Sandler
Rob Schneider
David Spade
Julia Sweeney
Al Franken
Norm Macdonald
Jay Mohr
Sarah Silverman

In correct, and fuck you for saying that. SNL didn't get REALLY GOOD until the mid-to-late 80s. I'm sick of people saying that the 70s stuff was the best. It wasn't. Fuck The Coneheads. Fuck Samurai John Belushi. Hell, fuck John Belushi in general. He wasn't that funny. And fuck when they used to waste time on stand up comedians.

SNL was first good in the early 80s, when Eddie Murphy was on it. Then following two terrible seasons (1984-85, 1985-86), the show really started to hit its stride. Jon Lovitz and Dennis Miller, the sole cast members to survive the dismal '85-'86 season soon found themselves working alongside Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon, and Phil Hartman. Thus began the show's Golden Age, 1986-1995, which ended when Sandler and Farley left in 1995. The cast over this period included Mike Myers, Chris Farley, David Spade, Tim Meadows, Chris Rock, Michael McKean, Victori Jackson, Jan Hooks, Al Franken, Janeane Garafolo, Chris Elliot, A. Whitney Brown, Norm MacDonald, Melanie Hutsell, Sarah Silverman, Ben Stiller, Ellen Cleghorne, Julia Sweeney, and Jay Mohr.

The show then floundered around for a few years, mostly because Lorne Michaels expanded the cast to try and avoid the "A Star Is Born, Then Said Star Leaves And The Show Suddenly Sucks Until Someone Else Steps Up" cycles of the past.

The show resurged in 1998 when Darrell Hammond and Molly Shannon became breakout stars as a result of the Lewinsky scandal, and Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, and Horatio Sanz rose up as well. Tim Meadows, who had been on since 1991, continued to be popular during this period as well. Then Ferrell left in 2002 and things quickly fell apart. Hammond was one of the show's last bright spots until he left in 2009. The only good things on SNL these days are Digital Shorts, Weekend Update (sometimes), and a couple of sketches each year if they have a guest they're actually inspired to write something funny for.

I think SNL is quite funny, just not as much as it used to be. The late 90s and early 2000s were the funniest in my opinion, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, plus Will Ferrell, back when he was actually hilarious on a fairly consistent basis. However, the cultural and especially political impact of SNL these days is unprecedented. The Sarah Palin bits, classic. SNL will never suck as much as the 70s though. However, I wish they would bring back Amy Poehler as that little "Rick, Rick!" girl. Fucking hilarious. And Rachel Dratch was good too. But Jimmy Fallon. Pfft. Laughed in every damn skit he was in. And only twice was it funny to watch.

*Edit: Meant 70s, not 80s. Oops.

It's funny, but "Happy Fun Ball", "Colon Blow", and "Crystal Gravy" were better.
