I'm not sure if i imagined this whole thing or not.
Recently i have been buying cds off Amazon quite cheaply for about £2 each including postage (they are used) and today i got the final cd: Stain - Living color
However as soon as i opened the packaging up and got to the cd it immeditely became clear this CD was different... the jewel case is red.
When i say red i mean not just the bit where the cd sits in is red (the cd mold bit) the whole cd case is red. The whole box is this transparent red color.
Now i was thinking there are two possible reasons for this.
1. The CD is used so the box must have been trashed and replaced with this new one.
or
2. The CD is some sort of rare collectors cd were the box is a different color or it is a limited print.
Now i am not sure if i imagined this i.e. that coloured cd cases are rare or not. Though i have seen other CD cases like this. I have seen a copy of Alice in Chains - self titled album (tripod) were the cover is a transparent yellow. Could these just be broken cases being replaced?
I vaguely remember that there was some record by some famous band that was printed in the wrong color and therefore it is a collectors item now - can't for the life of me at the moment remember who the band are and what album it is.
So basically have any of you ever came across these "rare coloured jewel cases" or what is your experience with them?
EDIT:

That's the alice in chains album: it's purple here but i am nearly certain i saw it in yellow.

I've got a copy of Stain as well, and yeah, it's red. I don't own Tripod on CD, but I do have it on cassette, and the tape case is a bright neony lime green color. I think it's a different edition type thing, like gold Zelda cartridges. That's the extent of my experiences with coloured cases, I think.
Also, this reminded me, didn't the first run of CD's for Jar of Flies have plastic flies in the spine, or something? I think a friend of mine told me about that.

I collect cds but i don't go for the ultra rare ones or anything. It's a nice addition to my collection then.
I never heard that about jar of flies but i just looked it up on the ole wikipedia. Your friend is correct.

| The first pressing of the CD contained plastic flies in the spine of the jewel case. In 1995, the album was briefly re-released in a limited edition, short-lived format called CD Plus. It contained a second CD of drivers in order to access special computer content on the CD. The key extras were lyrics, a discography and the full versions of both of the videos released from the EP, "No Excuses" and "I Stay Away". The picture on the CD itself is the purple/orange photo negative of the one found on the regular release CD. |

I bought Stain at a pawn shop (along with Vivid and Time's Up for $10 total), and it was signed by all four band members.

Yeah I remember buying "tripod" vividly the day it came out and the first releases of the CD were definitely packaged in a transparent neon yellow jewel case... Not sure about the "stain" album but it could be a bootleg...Are you getting these discs from a trusted seller.?

I bought it off a seller on Amazon. I am presuming it is. I actually owned the album before but i lost it and it wasn't red hence why i am asking and the tracks are all there and it's not bootleg quality.

As far as I can tell there was no "special" edition of this album so I'd definitely lean to the " broken case swapped for a new one' theory. Jewell cases are failry inexpensive and a reputible seller wouldn't want to be sending out Cd's with janky cracked cases.

What about mine, then? Just a massive coincidence?
EDIT: Also, just googling around quickly, I can find plenty of online stores selling it that note it has a transparent red jewel case.

I stand corrected... I was using the search term special edition...Then probably just like the Alice in Chains Album a colored jewel case was just part of the original packaging design.
P.S.
I'm new to boards here and I must say it's quite nice to be able to have all these little questions in life not only answered but scrutinized down to the bare raw facts. No inane or small detail ignored!
Good sh*t!

Lemme think...
My dad's copy of Under the Blacklight by Rilo Kiley is purple.
My copy of the Nine Inch Nails single Head Like a Hole is a greenish color.
My copy of the New Order album Republic is in a orange pouch thing.
Also, while we're on the topic of CD cases, one time I got an Of Montreal CD that had a friggin' cool pop-out-picture-book thing that came out when I opened the CD. Too bad the album itself kind of sucked.

That purple case tripod in the OP is kinda rare. I like colored cases, I've got a few CDs that have them :
Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals (blue)
Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao (red, with metal slipcase. Bottom of the CD is red too!)
Orange 9mm - Pretend I'm Human (orange)
Balzac - HATRED (orange)
Nocturnal Breed - Aggressor (red)
Another cool one I have is Godflesh's Selfless/Merciless. This one has ridges on the front cover that allow you to see both album covers depending on which angle you look at it. I'm kind of annoyed that one of the tabs busted off it though.

Holy fucking balls, another Nocturnal Breed fan on SydLexia! Nice, man, nice! I actually have that CD, although I don't know if it's in a colored case or not, I'll have to go check. Regardless, amazing album.

I checked out my copy of Stain, and it looks like the side panel is ridged. Other than that, it's normal.
