Quote:
That live-action Mortal Kombat trailer recently released on YouTube maybe didn't have anything to do with a new Mortal Kombat game, but it makes little difference as Warner Bros. today has coincidentally announced a new Mortal Kombat game anyway. Evidently dubbed simply "Mortal Kombat," the new game is being developed by a new team for release in 2011.

The new team, called NetherRealm Studios, is being guided by original Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon. This new Mortal Kombat promises a "reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic" along with a "new graphics engine." It's a little unclear from the wording, but it sounds like it'll go the Street Fighter 4 route, with 3D visuals but strictly 2D gameplay.

This new entry will also add tag-team modes in addition to standard one-on-one bouts, including a "co-op arcade mode" that has two players teaming up to take on other teams online. Warner Bros. also promises the "deepest story mode of any fighting game" with a return of "iconic warriors" from past Mortal Kombat games, but no specific characters are mentioned. And of course, there will also be a return of Fatalities.

"This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever," said Boon in a statement.

Mortal Kombat is being developed for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and other than 2011, no more-specific release date was announced. But as usual with just about every new game announcement these days, we wouldn't be surprised to find out even more about it at E3 next week.

Damn. The original rumored date was Q4 2010. I really wish they could have hit that date. But I would rather get quality than a rushed game.

I'm tired of mortal kombat. They're gonna have to do something really fantastic for me to consider this after I bought MKvDCU on launch.

I tried so hard to enjoy that game.

I watched that live action movie pitch, also. To be honest, it looks pretty cool. I mean, it has absoloutely nothing to do with the games, but it's an entertaining reimagining. It looks a lot more interesting than legend of chun-li, dragonball: evolution, and king of fighters, at least. MK's mythos got so complicated and zany that a reboot in a different frame of mind may be just what it needs.

A new engine could mean great things, I think if they took the gameplay of MK4 and tweaked it some more it would be gold.

Well, I for one thought that looked pretty sweet. Better than than anything else I have seen labeled "Mortal Kombat" in at least the last 10 years.

It's too late for Mortal Kombat. The series hasn't been relevant since UMK3. It's amazing that they're still trying to pump out new games despite the last 5 or 6 being complete failures.

Sir, the MK games are all fun. Sure they are not balanced at all, but MK never was so that is irrelevant. Saying they are failures is like comparing them to Big Rigs or Daikatana, it doesn't work. So go away.

I'm excited about this. With so many series rebooting and whatnot, they actually might pull something worthwhile off.

Call me picky, or crazy, but the only thing I didn't like about that gameplay footage was the "I'm being frozen" effect. The animation seemed too canned. Or something.

But yay for character-specific fatalities!!

Incorrect. Despite mixed critical reception, MK4, Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon all had strong sales. Shaolin Monks was also pretty successful.

In fact, Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Shaolin Monks all have 80% or better ratings on GameRankings.

Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate or otherwise, is the most poorly received MK game ever made.

Mortal Kombat was Midway's only surefire moneymaker over the last decade, hence why they cranked out DA, Deception, Shaolin Monks, and Armageddon so quickly. If the company had been in better shape, those games would have gotten the benefit of polish and would have been even better.

For me, a franchise is only fun when it's mythos becomes so expansive and distorted that it stops making sense to most sane people.

I can't name all of Sonic's friends.
I can't list every Belmont ever.
I don't know how the various Mega Mans (Mega Men?) are related.
I'm not sure how many times Johnny Cage has died.

And I wouldn't have it any other way. Reboots are lame.

Part of why I thought MKvsDC wasn't that good was because it was toned down for Teens. If they go back to the crazy fatalities you could do in the originals, it might be good.

I'm still waiting for a Killer Instinct sequel, I feel like I'm the only person who loved that game.

You are not alone. I absolutely loved the original Killer Instinct. As a matter of fact, the first time I pulled off an Ultra combo and the announcer went all echoed-out and screamed, "ULTRA, ULTRA, Ultra," I may have received my very first erection.

Also, fuck that Penny Arcade comic. Perfect Dark is easily in my top five games ever.

*flails*

I always thought that would be a cool crossover with MK though, almost more than SF.

The comic is referring to Perfect Dark Zero, which was a piece of shit.

see I'm thinking differently. I feel that they should concentrate more on the actual fights, making all of the moves and techniques feel as powerful and as brutal as possible, and worry less about how many different ways they can decapitate somebody.

MKvDCU had most of the first part right. Bone breaks felt brutal, people getting stomped on looked more painful than goofy. If they went that way and just made the combatants move more fluidly and battles less robotic, they'd have a winner.

I suppose they could get some kind of animations engine that works procedurally or something, those newfangled things that are all the rage...

I don't really know what I'm talking about. But I adhere: Better animations, more fluidity!

Also... I'd love a KI sequel, but I don't trust Rare not to deliver a clusterfuck anymore.

MK has always been about awkward, stunted 70s grindhouse kung fu. It's already been confirmed the new game is being done with motion capture, so that's not likely to change.

I think the Mortal Kombat franchise died when they stopped using live models.

The whole point of MK was that it looked like real people were bashing each other and tearing each other apart.

I also found that MK2 had the best sound out of all of them, not in terms of sound quality, but in the way it fits with the game. The hits sounded hard and brutal, you could feel the pain that the characters were in. The thick, hard bass just made it feel so real.

It would be awesome if they could pull off original MK-style animation in HD. And with newer technologies, they could easily animate it way better than they did back then.

I don't think I'm too eager to witness the revenge of Daniel Pesina and company...
