Also, if you don't know what DFA stands for, then you're a tool and it's obvious that your shitty musical tastes come straight from VH1.
Quoted for truth, although I certainly don't agree with the love for metalcore.
I'll try this as best I can.
1. Thrash Metal (Metallica, Sepultura, Slayer, Exhorder)
2. Death Metal (Obituary, Immolation, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse)
3. Heavy Metal (Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Motorhead)
4. Crossover Thrash (Birth A.D., S.O.D., D.R.I.)
5. Black Metal (Averse Sefira, Immortal, Darkthrone, Emperor)
And then just about everything else. I just sort my taste into "metal" and "everything else", and I listen to just about everything except for "post-grunge" and most metalcore. NotEnoughGolds, I would definitely recommend Exhorder if you haven't heard of them, they basically started the groove metal genre, although they were a lot thrashier than most groove bands.

4. Math Rock (Slint, The For Carnation, Tortoise, etc)
5. Indie [I guess?] (Beirut, Bright Eyes, Calexico, Blonde Redhead)
6. Noise/Feedback Rock (Swans, Sonic Youth, The Raveonettes, The Jesus and Mary Chain)
7, Heavy Metal (Danzig, Judas Priest, Maiden, Sabbath)
8. Classic Rock (Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, The Animals)

Cammy just got me to listen to the Swans last night, Aeonic. I dig them quite a bit.

I think a lot of metalcore sucks, but some of it is also quite good.
A7X (which is a lot thrashier than most metalcore bands), Killswitch Engage, and Soilwork are very good. All That Remains is pretty good. Bullet for My Valentine is okay, Atreyu is a little bit worse, and As I Lay Dying is pretty bad.
Somehow, I have not heard of Exhorder. I'll remember to look them up, or pay attention if I hear them on XM42.

Oh, Exhorder were glorious. It's the stuff you're not going to find unless you do some deep digging, but it's totally worth it. Easily the best thrash of the '90's, along with Demolition Hammer. Here's the title track off their debut, which is an excellent song, although I prefer "Homicide" and the brilliantly titled "Anal Lust":
The only metalcore I like is the progressive stuff like Between the Buried and Me, Protest the Hero, and The Human Abstract, the other stuff doesn't do it for me.

I like Between the Buried and Me.
You don't even like A7X? Even the stuff they made before they were actually popular?
According to Wikipedia, only their first two albums are considered "Metalcore." I also happen to think that "Waking the Fallen," their second album, is their best one.
Songs I would recommend off that album are Chapter 4 or Unholy Confessions.
Edit: Adversary is another good groove metal band, but unfortunately they are nowhere to be found on youtube. I recommend the song Manifest Humility. Very Lamb-of-God-ish.

My brother was a huge A7X fan back in the day, so I'm very familiar with all their material. Not my scene at all, but I can see why people would like it.

I recently heard a relatively new band (debut album was released in 2009) on XM42.
The band's name is Incite. I think they'd fall under the Thrash Metal genre.

Although I usually only listen to metal's various offshoots I just heard this on the radio and I have to admit I loved it, anyone else like this song? Also what silly genre name does this band have?

MGMT is awesome. I would argue Electric Feel, as well as their other singles, have a Snythpop feel to them, but some of their other stuff leans more towards traditional instruments, giving them a more slow Psychedelic Rock feel.
Wikipedia lists them as:
Psychedelic Pop
New Wave
Synthpop
Progressive Rock
If ya like Electric Feel, look up Time to Pretend and Kids. I would recommend picking up Oracular Spectacular if ya like those two as well, as it isn't an expensive CD and is worth it for those three alone in my eyes.

Smashing Pumpkins used to be one of my favorites, but I grew out of them, still like em' quite a bit, though. I never use to think much of JD, but I've really started to like them a lot lately, Day Of The Lords is probably one of the best songs of all-time. Never heard of Crystal Castles. Hate Swans. Never heard HEALTH. Cure is very hit or miss for me, but Disintergration is probably one of my favorite albums of all-time. Nine Inch Nails are cool. Depeche Mode is cool. Never really listened to Coil, though I have heard them a couple of times. I feel Pearl Jam are overrated among grunge bands, but they're still pretty great, can never bring myself to change than channel when one of their songs come on the radio.
My top 10 favorite bands atm are: Slowdive, Idaho, Stars Of The Lid/Take Pills Die, Pet Shop Boys, Bailter Space, Bleach, Plexi, David Bowie, Daft Punk, Boris
Here's some recommendations for yah: (bands with albums in parenthesis, first tier albums are bolded)
Post-Punk - Bleach (Killing Time), Bauhaus (In The Flat Field, The Sky's Gone Out), Bailter Space (Thermos), The Chameleons (Script Of The Bridge, Strange Times, What Does Anything Mean? Basically), The Church (Starfish), Comsat Angels (Sleep No More), Gang Of Four (Entertainment!), James Chance (Buy!), Josef K (The Only Fun In Town), Psychedelic Furs (All Of This And Nothing), The Sound (From The Lion's Mouth, Jeopardy, Shock Of Daylight + Heads and Hearts), Sonic Youth (Sonic Youth + Early Live)
Gothic Rock/Darkwave - Eden House (Smoke And Mirrors)
Noise Pop/Rock - The Manhattan Love Suicides (S/T, Burnt-Out Landscapes), Black Tambourine (Complete Recordings), Velocity Girl (Simpatico!), Sonic Youth (Bad Moon Rising, Confusion Is Sex + Kill Yr Idols, Evol, Sister)
Ambient - Stars Of The Lid (entire discography), Biosphere (Substrata), Aphex Twins (Selected Ambient Works 85-92), Brian Eno (Ambient 1 - Music For Airports, Ambient 4 - On Land), Eluvium (Talk Amongst The Trees), Lustmord (Heresy), Take Pills Die (There Are Better Ways To Kill Yourself You Know, Dead Sea Parting, Sweater Kittens), Zoviet France (Shadow: Thief Of The Sun)
I've noticed that a lot of people like "Day of the Lords", which I think is a fine song, but it's not one of my favorites (such as "The Only Mistake", "The Sound of Music", "Insight", or "Decades"). Also, that's a shame you hate Swans, their album White Light From the Mouth of Infinity is one of my favorite albums of all time. HEALTH is considered a noise rock band, although they're a bit more accessible than most; I'd check out "Die Slow" and "We Are Water" from them, and the album GET COLOR if you like those two songs. Coil is really, really hard to sum up with one song, as they cover a ton of genres (primarily industrial, ambient, acid house, drone, and I-don't-even-know-what-the-heck-this-is); if you're interested in them, I guess start with either Horse Rotorvator, The Ape of Naples, or Love's Secret Domain (any would be a good starting point). The thing with Pearl Jam is that a lot of people see them as a grunge band, but they pretty much grew almost entirely out of the grunge sound with their fourth album, and they've already released nine albums to date; I'd check out Yield.
I like Pet Shop Boys, David Bowie, and ESPECIALLY Daft Punk, and I'll check out those other favorite bands of yours (I've been told I'd like Boris).
Also, thanks for the recommendations! I'm already familiar with Bauhaus, Chameleons, Comsat Angels, Gang of Four, Josef K, The Sound, Sonic Youth, Aphex Twin, and Eluvium, but I'll be sure to check out those other bands.
