Carleton Cuse and Damon Lindelof wrote that episode at the beginning of the series, because they knew how they wanted it to end. The only changes I know about are the Eko thing (because he wanted too much money) and Ben being there (Ben was originally only slated to appear in 3 episodes, but the fans loved him).
I think the end is very touching. The FST universe is a limbo, where people meet up with the most important people in their lives and then they move on together in the afterlife. Some aren't ready. Ben has to "awaken" Danielle and Alex. Eloise has her son and Charles.
Now, I don't believe in an afterlife, but if I did, this is kind of how I'd want it to be. Moving on with the most important people of my life.
