I really like David Tennant as Dr. Who. I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen any of the earlier stuff.
I don't know if I'll watch once Tennant is gone. The new guy looks dumb.

David Tennant's fantastic, so's his predecessor Christopher Eccleston. Matt Smith looks like he might be decent, but if the stories start turning dark because he's near the end of his life I might stop. As for the older episodes, you can get a few of the 3rd Doctor ones on XBL, other then that I'd just hit Hulu or Youtube

Man, Doctor who is an absolute cash cow, you really think they'll end it with his last regeneration?

I dunno, but they'll probably try and draw out the last few Doctors a bit more then 9 and 8. Either they'll end it with a spectacular show down between him and the Master or the Daleks, or they'll find some gimmick like finding some lost art to give him some more regenerations

How many does he get? Isn't the 13th Doctor supposed to be evil?

A Time Lord gets 12 regenerations, although the Master has found ways around this, mainly through stealing them from other Time Lords or being given them for doing some sort of favor. According to the story "Trial of the Time Lord" the character called the Valeyard is a manifestation of the Doctor's evil, created at some point between the 12th and 13th Doctor, so he might go crazy, who knows.

All concerns about Matt Smith's neck are erased, he is really good. I mean Tennant is probably my favorite Doctor to date, even more so than Tom Baker's scarf, but they did not grimdark it up for Smith. Also after the string of butterfaces Tennant got Amy Pond is the HOTNESS.

I'm liking this season a lot as well. Smith seems to have worked some of Tennant's...kineticism into his own incarnation. No complaints about a redheaded Scottish girl in her twenties either.

From The Escapist
Terry Pratchett may write about magic and space turtles, but he doesn't think that Doctor Who should be able to just make stuff up.
Discworld creator Terry Pratchett has taken umbrage at the storytelling of Doctor Who, calling it "ludicrous", and saying that it "breaks most of the laws of narrative".
"[A] god from the machine is what the Doctor now is," he said, writing in the magazine SFX. "A decent detective story provides you with enough tantalizing information to allow you to make a stab at a solution before the famous detective struts his stuff in the library."
"Doctor Who replaces this with speed, fast talking, and what appears to be that wonderful element 'makeitupasyougalongeum'. I don't know about you, but I don't think I would dare try to jump-start a spaceship that looks like the Titanic by diving it into the atmosphere."
Pratchett also isn't particularly fond of the rather loose definition of science on the show, calling it "pixel thin":
Pratchett wrote: |
I'm sorry about this, but I just don't think that you can instantly transport a whole hospital onto the moon without all of the windows blowing out. Oh! You use a force field, do you?! And there's the trouble; one sentence makes it all OK. |
"I just wish that it was not classified as science fiction," he added.
Pratchett did admit that he still watched the show however, despite his grievances: "[it's]pure professionally-written entertainment, even if it helps sometimes if you leave your brain on a hook by the door ... I might shout at the screen again, but I will be watching on Saturday," he admitted. "After all, when you've had your moan you have to admit that it is very, very entertaining, with its heart in the right place, even if its head is often in orbit around Jupiter."

I'm rather embarrassed to admit that I somehow completely missed the Dr. Who bandwagon. (I don't know how--I love all things sci-fi and all things British.) I don't even know the premise, really. Where would be a good place to start for a complete newb, if I was going to start trying to watch the series?

I started at the beginning of the '05 reboot, which did me perfectly fine.

I got hooked when they really started showing it off during Tennant's run but any of the stuff starting at that point is fine. Bear in mind the franchise is around 30+ years old (and I must admit I have zero awareness of anything pre-Eccleston other than one regeneration was known for his scarf).

I never cared for car shows regardless of country of origin. The only things I watch on BBC America other than Doctor Who are Graham Norton on occasion and now they're showing ST:TNG. I'll also switch over to it if I see they're showing Father Ted or anything involving the Pythons. I was also really into Coupling when it was on.

I decided to watch the old stuff, too, starting with Tom Baker because my mom remembers him... I just finished Terror of the Zygons a few hours ago. But yeah, I'm pretty in love with this show. It's fantastic. I hope they bring back the Zygons in the new series; I like them a lot. Tardis said they were Tennant's favorite classic monster, too, so neat-o. I'm stumped as to whether I like Baker or Tennant better, as the Doctor, but I think I lean toward Tennant.
The latest episode I was disappointed with. It was good and all premise-wise, I just found it really, annoyingly predictable.

I think it's brilliant that they tried to explain him changing in each incarnation, but isn't it only supposed to happen like 11 times and then he's dead? Sure, they can say, "Oh, no, this is a different Doctor, a relative" and all, but that's just kind of cheap. I read a little bit about it, so I might even be off on this. Never watched it yet, but will at some point. I get bored real easy so I try to have varied tastes
