..it can be quite a sad ordeal since the band that musician was in may not create music anymore or the loss of a talented person. Of course when any human dies it is a sad occasion.

However i have a genuine problem in the case of some musicians dying. Like i said when someone dies it can be quite sad for fans or even non-fans of a band/musician so why i get pissed off is not to do with the musician itself since that's just disrespectful but due to the hype that it gets.

Here's a good recent example:

As i'm sure you probably have heard the Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan passed away due to natural causes.

Yes it is sad that someone died of natural causes at such at young age, it can be quite distressing to fans of Avenged Sevenfold that they may not continue to make more music (even though some fans are telling the band not to go on which i also have problem with but that's a different tale).

To get to the point it pisses me off to no end when a musician dies and they are heralded as the best musician to ever live. Of course people think they can't come off with "Oh the Rev has died he wasn't that good" since it may be disrespectful since the guy has just died but the fact of the matter as a drummer myself is HE WASN'T. Yes he could play the drums well but he was not a virtuoso of the instrument he didn't revolutionize it or anything like that yet now he is "the best drummer who ever lived".

I've already witnessed the countless facebook updates of how he was the greatest thing since sliced bread and the countless RIP on EVERYTHING.

The thing is though this is only the beginning..

Take another example which the musician died a while ago: Dimebag Darrell.

Before his death i was a part of an active guitarist community (since i play guitar as well) and you would see threads of who is your favorite guitarist or the best guitarist ever. Who would come out? The usual ones, Van Halen, Hendrix, Page, Clapton and maybe sometimes someone else.

Then he was tragically killed and then: Who is the best guitarist ever? Dimebag motherfucking Darrell of course. Then what annoyed me more was after everytime Pantera was mentioned or Damageplan RIP Dimebag would be swiftly following in conversation.

No one gave two fucks about him when he was alive, why now? Out of respect? Is it human nature that when someone dies they are put on a pedestal as being a genius?

Maybe you think I am a heartless bastard but when someone dies and they are automatically the best thing ever it becomes pretty tiring after a while.

For what it's worth, I thought Dimebag was a phenomenal guitar player worthy of every ounce of respect before he died, but I can see what you mean.

Furthermore I predict Kurt Cobain slamming in this thread. Razz

Well there is going to be some people who liked him but majority just jumped on the "i love dimebag" wagon.

Speaking of Cobain i was going to mention him. As much as i love Nirvana he is not a great guitarist. A better song writer than guitarist.

I liked his guitar style, almost a pop level catchy fusion of punk and folk, but the lyrics were incomprehensible half the time. I really enjoy a lot of the older demo stuff that was released a while back, feels like I'm listening to some unknown local band with a lot of hidden potential. The old stuff from before no one knew who the fuck they were is a lot more interesting than what they became known for.

That's not to say that i don't like his playing he is just not very technically proficient. Yes i do agree though some of the early material like Fecal Matter stuff and various unreleased songs and b-sides are better than the album material. Come on Death or Help Me I'm Hungry or whatever it's proper name is is amazing!

What I also hate is when a musician dies and doesn't get their due at all, let alone an over-abundance of hype.

For example, the legendary Indian sarod player Ali Akbar Khan died this summer just a few days before Michael Jackson. Did anyone hear about it? Nope. Fuck you, Western music press, Ali Akbar Khan is thirty times the musician Michael Jackson was.

Also, you say that you get pissed off that people say Jimmy Sullivan was the greatest drummer ever now that he's dead. Well, Max Roach may very well have been the greatest drummer ever, but when he died three years ago nobody gave a shit.

Would we still care about Hendrix if he was still alive? His music was very much a product of its time, and if he had kept on going doing the same exact thing, I doubt he'd be as revered as he is. Page and Clapton have lost some of their shine; aside from Page's tour with Black Crowes, I rarely meet anyone who gives a shit about post-70's Clapton or post-70s Page. Why? Because they got boring. Page does the same stuff over and over and Clapton got fucking lame. Like, inexcusably fucking lame. He got "Wah, wah, wah, you look wonderful tonight, wah wah wah, my poor dead son, wah wah wah, change the world." Shut up, Clapton. Clapton should have gotten hit by a bus right after recording "Layla". Then he would have been fucking amazing.

I agree with all of this.

Also, I think the best way to go is like Hank Williams.

I agree with everything Syd said. The sad thing is that Hendrix was moving into a huge blues phase and that is where he would have started changing as a musician, but unfortunately he will always be remembered as the guy who wrote songs about acid, choked on his own puke and now has shit tons of faux hippie children worshiping him.

I was watching the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert on HBO and Jeff Beck and Billy Gibbons covered "Foxy Lady." Sonically, it was a pretty good cover of the song, but I found myself sort of bored. I realized that the real appeal of Jimi was his stage performance and charisma. If Jimi were alive, he would have been as lame as every other old fart on that show.

Syd's right; Clapton and Page, once rock gods, are now just two old men. They can still play well if they soak their hands in wolfsbane for an hour, but the fact remains that they are not full of piss and vinegar anymore and don't have "presence" (pardon the pun). That being said, I can throw on "461 Ocean Boulevard" or "Houses of the Holy" and they are completely vindicated.

When a musician dies, we post about it in the "dead celebrities of 2010" topic.

Hendrix may be the greatest practitioner of the pentatonic and blues scales I will ever know.

On a serious note, let's just wonder if our great-great-great-great-great grandchildren (if our species isn't extinct or on the verge of intellectual collapse) can find anything about Hendrix. The Test of Time is what I'm talking about. So as it pains me today to see all this hubbub about Hendrix and Cobain and Mrs. Bobby McGee, I smile and even chuckle when I postulate that knowledge of their deeds from their short lives will be muchly, if not completely, forgotten.

RIP Hacker.
