One of the originators of glorious extreme metal, and at the very least, broke ground for black and death metal. And to some, they were fine practitioners of thrash metal in the early days.
I personally make no difference between the two bands. I put them in the same playlist on my iPod. The idea that Tom Warrior thought that the difference between two bands was that they got better at playing is fucking ridiculous. To me, Hellhammer is Celtic Frost and Celtic Frost is Hellhammer. It was even more blasphemous that they didn't play "Triumph of Death" live on the reunion tours.
Also, to paraphrase Eddie Murphy, "'UGH' is a Tom Warrior lyric. He wrote that shit. He was looking at his music sheet and said 'I need a word here, UGH! That's good!'"

I like Hellhammer a lot more than Celtic Frost even though they're basically the same band. I don't like the guitar sound of Celtic Frost (more to do with the fancier production I guess). Hellhammer's punkier songs appeal more to me, too. Cold Lake is probably my favorite album from Celtic Frosted Flakes (I know it's considered blasphemous to like a hair metal album more than To Mega Therion, but still).

I always preferred Frost to Helllammer, personally, but I think I'm in the minority on that regard. However, I do acknowledge the shittiness of "Cold Lake." Anyone else notice that the main riff to "Cherry Orchards" sounds a bit like Metallica's "Seek and Destroy"?
The instruments are good, but holy shit Tom G. Warrior can't sing to save his life. Keep to the "UGH!"s. It's just so funny how a bunch of ugly-ass dudes are trying to be sexy and failing so epically.

I love that album (especially "Cherry Orchards"), but the vocals are terrible.
