And Greg, what do you mean by "inspiring crust?"

Crust punk is a style of punk that basically sounds like the worst hardcore bands you could imagine trying to sound like Slayer. If you need a sample, try these guys, they're probably the most famous crust band:

Ok, I'll admit that sucked, but pretty much every innovator gave us some shitty bands as a by-product. I mean hell "Black Dog" probably spawned the entire-glam metal scene alone, so Led Zeppelin should lose points for that?

No, they already had their points taken away after a committee decision in 1987.

I was joking about the whole thing, of course.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

So I bought "Reign In Blood" on sale for $8. And it was the goofiest fucking thing I had ever heard. I had never been a big fan of death metal, and "Reign In Blood" did nothing to shatter my preconceived notions that death metal was nothing but cacophonic guitars, screamy vocals, dumb lyrics, and the idea that if you can't be talented, you can at least be loud.

Seriously, listening to a guy scream "NOW I SHALL REIGN IN BLOOD!" is the goofiest fucking thing I've heard. And this is coming from a guy who listens to Manowar at least once a day.

I think my main problem with death metal is that it's not music in the traditional sense of the word. Music is built around basic concepts such as melody and harmony, and these do not exist in death metal. Death metal is all about disharmony, and it favors cacophony over symphony; this is the same problem I have with a lot of hardcore punk. Now I'm not saying that you can't enjoy this stuff, or that there are no redeeming qualities in it, but I'm say that it's noise. You're basically listening to John Cage on cocaine. Enjoy your noise.

Could not have said it better, especially that last part. I love Maiden, Manowar, Metallica, etc, but Slayer and bands like it just do nothing for me. Too much noise, not enough music. If its what you like, that's awesome, I just don't share that taste.

I say Megadeth is the most overrated metal band of all-time, Mustaine's a douchebag who can't sing or write for shit. He's like a talentless Axl Rose, and his fans aren't any better either.
Douchebag? Perhaps. Overrated? I don't agree with that sentiment, His vocals have changed over the years, somewhat matured.
1992:

notice the vocals are harsh, angry, and in the vein of Axl type vocals as you describe them (or I misread and your comparing his attitude to that of Axl, or both)
onto 2008 Post-drugs and shit:

Not as aggressive but sounds good. I never liked the album version of the song though, I'm just weird like that.

I'm still not really seeing the noise connection. When I think "noise", I think of drums going off with no discernible pattern, incredibly off-key singing, tons of feedback, etc. The only thing "noisy" about Slayer would be the guitar solos. But is this:

Really that much different from say, Metallica? There's riffs, rhythm, no feedback, vocal lines, etc. I get that people don't like it, but I wouldn't label it noise. The atonal solos, maybe. But I wouldn't say there's anything noisy about the riff or drums.
Or maybe it's because I've hate noise rock and love death metal. I'll probably stop now.

Slayer definately has it's place in heavy metal lore. South of Heaven, Reign in Blood and Season's in the the Abyss are some truely kick ass albums. You almost have to go into it with joking attitude because some of the lyrics are just rediculous., but the muisc is hard core. It took me a while to look past they lyrics and volcals since I was used to Metallica growing up and they're lyrcs and Hetfield's voice is awesome.

If you're on the fence about Slayer and you like metal, listen to Season's in the Abyss. This song sold me on them. That video was awesome to watch at 1am on Head Banger's Ball. I agree with the above post though, the guitar solos are noise and they suck.

What's funny to me is no one has a counter argument to my "no extreme metal is not noise" statement. I basically laid it down and silenced everyone.

(I realize this is more of me patting myself in the back, but I can't help but feel that everytime I say something that shuts down any and all opposing side, they actually do have something to say, they just for whatever reason don't get around to it.)

Okay saw em last night at Mayhem Fest.

They were freaking awesome. Period. Cool

then Manson came on last, which was anti climactic to say the least. We left halfway through his set because he was off key and just boring to watch. Kind of a let down cause I've always been a big Manson fan. Confused

Also God Forbid and Cannibal Corpse were fucking killer. Surprised

I got horribly sun burned due to my lack of foresight and sunscreen. Embarrassed

Syd, they had these giant screens that showed the stage for all us people way in the back on the lawn, and in between shows they had an add to text a msg onto the screen, I texted WWW.SYDLEXIA.COM "POP CULTURE ATE MY BRAIN" but never saw it come up on the screen, maybe it showed up after we left. Hopefully you get a bunch obnoxious metal heads showing up here soon. Razz

"MANSON FOR PRESIDENT!!!111" Rolling Eyes

Hey I'm a Manson fan but yeah some of them are a bit No... just no.

I still have no idea what they were thinking when they put the whole thing together, Okay after Slayer kicks everyone's ass Marilyn will start late and launch into all his boring new songs, while rambling about drugs between songs, everyone will love that right?

I swear a ton of the crowd was like Ok Slayer is done, let's go home Laughing

The low point of the evening was Manson asking for a show of hands with the guys and the ladies, and then making a joke about rape, after which he launched into a horribly off key rendition of Tourniquet, then proceeded to ramble and wail through the crappiest versions of The Beautiful People and Sweet Dreams I've ever had the misfortune to hear from the parking lot while we looked for our car. WHAT!?

I don't mean to ruin your argument but i saw Iron Maiden in 2005 with Marilyn Manson supporting him and there was no cries. They were both very good.

Sorry bro.

Even if you don't care for Manson at least having him on a tour with an older band will expose all his young fans to some good music they may have been missing out on.
