Bauhaus. I read a description of them, they're detailed as a "dark, brooding gothic art rock band in the vein of Joy Division", hey, thought they might be good; plus, I've read nothing but phenomenal reviews praising their albums. Then I download three songs by them, and...noooo. No no no no. Ugh. Not surprisingly, they're a completely pretentious, self-absorbed, and downright boring band.

Yea, but are they even overrated? I didn't think there were ultra-popular, I thought they just as you put it "plain, flat out suck".

Unfortunately, I have to put up with seeing people wearing Hinder t-shirts at my school all the time, so I guess somebody out there likes them.

Well, it's like you can't go a full day without hearing some Hinder song being played no less than 5 times on the radio. I mean, Hinder comes on, I turn it, then an hour later THE SAME FUCKING SONG PLAYS. Even if a song is decent, the radio will make you sick of it. But hearing Hinder all day makes you wanna tear the stereo out of the car and go shove it right up that disc-jockey's ass.

What songs did you download? I got into Bauhaus a few months ago and I really like them (except Mask and Burning From the Inside, those albums are boring). In the Flat Field has a lot of great songs and The Sky's Gone Out is pretty good too.

Did I already say metalcore in this thread? At any rate, I'd like to expand: I was reading some reviews of Killswitch Engage's "Alive or Just Breathing", with a bunch of people drooling over it, and a bunch of them called it the one good album from metalcore. I figured I'd give it a shot and it was pretty bad. Whenever there were good riffs, they were ruined by horrible "hardcore" screaming. I wrote a more in-depth review here:
http://lavidastrangiato.blogspot.com/2009/03/review-killswitch-engage-alive-or-just.html
I'll just give my ending paragraph:
| Quote: |
In the end, "Alive or Just Breathing" gets a gigantic “meh.” For every kickass moment, there was at least one cringe-worthy moment. Also, I don't recall a single guitar solo on the album. The brings the score down significantly. I have no idea how this band became popular. Still, it’s a lot better than death core or screamo, so I guess you could take that as a compliment. Note that I’m not using the “suicide-inducingly bad” tag, so that’s something in itself.
Overall, I'll give Killswitch Engage's "Alive or Just Breathing" 2/5 stars. Could have been as high as 3/5 if there were some solos, but alas, there were none. If you're like me, you need some good classic metal to get that taste out of your ears, so here's Death Angel's "Thrashers." (In blog post, the video is here) |

That reminds me of an article I read in Terrorizer. There was a quote to the side of the page that said something about how the new era of digital recording had allowed all these shitty bands to release CDs. I looked at the band the article it was about and it was Lamb of God. Fuck Lamb of God.

In LoG's defense, "Ashes of the Wake" and "Sacrament" are both solid, good albums. But fuck "New American Gospel" and "As the Palaces Burn." Here's my old review of NAG on Encyclopedia Metallum:

Why musicians should be sober during recording - 45%
Written by enshinkarateman on February 9th, 2008
Black Label be damned. Apparently, the first song on Lamb of God’s “New American Gospel” was named after vocalist Randy Blythe’s drink of choice, and he was dead drunk when he recorded the vocals. And it’s a damn shame he was, because he almost ruins an otherwise listenable album.
The songs themselves are decent, but Randy’s indecipherable screaming is just irritating. Some songs you can get past it (“Black Label”, “In The Absence of the Sacred”, “Pariah”), but the majority of the album is a chore to listen to.
Not just because of the vocals, mind you. The drum sound is atrocious, with the double-bass having the dreaded “cardboard” sound. The drumming itself is fantastic, but the sound transformation it underwent during the producing stage killed it. Pity. The bass is good and audible, but usually doesn’t stand out much, save for the beginning of “Confessional”, which also features impressive drumming from Chris Adler.
Which brings us to the guitarists. I do not understand modern metal’s problem with solos. Sure, there’s a solo in “Letter to the Unborn”, and some interesting guitarwork in “Terror and Hubris in the House of Frank Pollard”, and “The Subtle Arts of Murder and Persuasion”, but really, for a band claiming to be “Pure American Metal”, there are simply not enough solos. Sure, the riffs are good, but, as the old saying goes “Man does not live on riff alone”, or something like that. The lack of solos are one reason as to why I would say “New American Gospel” is more of a hardcore album than a metal album, in addition to the slew of breakdowns and screaming vocals.
One thing that is outstanding about New American Gospel is the lyrics of Randy Blythe. His unconventional vocabulary makes for a refreshing change from the seemingly-juvenile “I hate everything” lyrics of your typical metalcore/hardcore band. Another positive thing about "New American Gospel" is the appearance of Today is the Day’s Steve Austin in “Terror and Hubris on the House of Frank Pollard.” His “duet” with Randy makes for a disturbing atmosphere, and Austin’s vocal delivery makes it possible to follow along with the lyrics printed in the booklet, which is a very appreciated change from Blythe's enigmatic howling.
Overall, Lamb of God miss the mark due to horrible vocals, lack of solos, and atrocious production. If Lamb of God went back and rerecorded “New American Gospel”, then maybe it would earn a passing grade. In the meantime, I recommend you pick up “Ashes of the Wake”, of you want Lamb of God at their peak.
Highlights: Black Label, Pariah, O.D.H.G.A.B.F.E., Letter to the Unborn |
If I'd have reviewed it today, it would have gotten a much lower score, probably near 20-25%. Ah, what a difference a year makes. I might have to post some of my old EM reviews on my blog when I'm starved for material.

Metallica is the most overrated band of all time. Dave Mustain made a by far superior band in Megadeath. Metallica just isn't innovative or particularly impressive

"Rosegarden Funeral of Sores", "Bela Lugosi's Dead", and "Hollow Hills". I used to HATE Rosegarden Funeral of Sores because of the vocals (like a jackhammer to the skull), but for some reason I really liked the music and now the song is tolerable. Bela Lugosi's Dead doesn't seem to go anywhere, and Hollow Hills is okay at best. I just don't really see what the big deal is, and it's annoying, because they seem like a band I should like, I just...don't. Could you recommend some better songs by them?

Sex Pistols and most other British punk bands.
If I want a punk band I'll listen to Dead Kennedys.

Bela Lugosi's dead is supposed to be one of their most popular songs. I like it but I kind of agree with how it doesn't go anywhere. You have to be on the mood for it. I don't like Rosegarden Funeral of Sores and Hollow Hills is pretty boring so I guess that's why you didn't like any of those songs. Most of their good songs are on In the Flat Field. You really can;t go wrong picking something off that album. I would recommend getting:
In the Flat Field
God in an Alcove
St. Vitus Dance
Nerves
Telegram Same
Terror Couple Kill Colonel
Ziggy Stardust
The Passion of Lovers
She's in Parties

I downloaded "She's In Parties" and it sounds nothing like the three songs I heard previously, and now I'm interested in hearing other songs by them. I'm gonna save up and buy In the Flat Field. Thanks for the recommendation!

Anti-Flag. I fucking HATE Anti-Flag. From the cerebellum popping, 12 year old boy sounding vocals, to the completely misguided attempt at being anti government, this band is a prime example of the fall of "Punk Rock" Sad because a lot of the bands that came out around the same time as Anti-Flag have matured into tightly knit, great sounding groups of musicians.

I'll probably get flamed for this but since a band has to be considered good in the first place to then be "overrated", I'll choose Led Zepplin. They were great growing up, but now minus about half a dozen songs, I want to kill my self everytime I hear them on the radio.
Houses of the Holy is not a good song, Neither is D'yer Makr and yet I hear these songs all the time on the radio(along with others).
Led Zepplin was important in the musical chain, but their catalog of music is waaaaay overrated.
Fool in the Rain sucks all the way from the gay lyrics to that retarded whistle solo in the middle.

Yeah, agreed. Bonus points for wearing plaid and leather jackets with mohawks on stage, but Aeropostale and gold watches off stage.

A-fucking-men. I had no idea they were popular now, that's terrible. I heard Fuck Police Brutality on the Cops Make Good Targets compilation (really good if you're into punk). I liked it so I downloaded their album and it was absolutely horrible. I figured I could just listen to the song I liked but hearing their other stuff ruined it for me.
