^ Agreed. Thriller is the shit. As is (and I don't care what anyone says) 'Hold Me' from Free Willy.

I've noticed that for a pop culture forum with most of us being born in the 80's, I don't see a lot of love for 80's pop music.
Also, younger generations don't seem to have any appreciation of Elvis Presley.

The Bouncing Souls got a lot of shit for being popular during the pop-punk boom of the 90's, and are still a bit of a whipping boy for the "TRU PUNKZ!" but I don't think they've ever made a bad album. Either I really liked them, or I just found out they're coming to Pittsburgh with D4 soon, and I AM GODDAMNED PSYCHED.

I agree Greg, I always liked the Bouncing Souls, "True Believers" era and earlier, it just seems they have kind of changed their style and aren't as fun loving as they use to be and turned darker and less happy, I fucking hate when bands do that.
Strung Out is incredibly underrated as a band in general. Their early stuff was so much fun, and they were incredibly talented musicians, but after 2001, they jumped on the political bandwagon and started making sad songs, super serious songs, and completely dumped the thing that made the band fun and interesting to listen to. Also, when you go from normal to wearing all black and fingernail polish and screaming in your songs, you lose cool points, especially when you were never like that before.

Jethro Tull was a band that I always thought had an interesting sound, but never really got much praise. Then again, they did win MTV's first "Best Metal Band" award when it clearly should have gone to Metallica.

Corgan's album is definitely an enjoyable, relaxing listen every once in a while. |
Indeed! I've always enjoyed the brooding, contemplative TheFutureEmbrace, which was basically the soundtrack to my life circa 8th grade.

I think people bash the Cranberries primarily because they completely shifted gears with the release of their third album, To The Faithful Departed (which, I admit, was terrible). As a result, their fourth and fifth albums didn't get the respect or acclaim they deserved.
Keane has been labelled as a "Coldplay clone", which I don't really agree with; I mean, sure Coldplay's biggest hit was piano-based ("Clocks"), but Keane is a piano-based band, and further examination will show that the bands aren't very alike. IMHO, Keane kind of slipped a bit with their third album, but they're still one of my favorite bands.

I'll be the first to admit that Jethro Tull winning that award is probably a bigger miscarriage of justice than Rodney King getting beatdown Big Bossman style by those racist cops. That said, I like Jethro Tull quite a bit. Aqualung is one of my favorite songs.

Yeah, Jethro Tull gets shit because they won an award. It's not their fault they won it. And I'm putting a cover of 'Cross-Eyed Mary' on my second album. Thanks to Alice Cooper for playing the song on his radio show

That probably turned a whole bunch of metalheads against them, who probably declared never to listen to their music.

Abagail is one of the best albums ever and should be used in musical ensemble classes for study on tightness.

Oh hell yeah, Argyle is still my ultimate frustration-venting song. I pride myself on being able to blast that song to uncomfortable levels while walking in angry circles in my apartment instead of acting out my wishes to just start fighting people on the street or at work.

I quite like Reel Big Fish, it's a shame they only had one or two hit singles before descending into semi-obscurity. I dunno if you'd consider them underrated, though.
I also agree with people who say Michael Jackson. He'll be remembered for the pedophilia accusations, and not his music. Which is a shame, some of it is great music.

I agree with you about the third album, however the Coldplay clone makes me laugh. If anyone is a clone, it's Coldplay, they sound extremely similar to U2. The lead singer for Keane has far more vocal range, and his voice reminds me of Freddie Mercury of Queen.
Other underrated bands:
Guster
Snow Patrol
Avenged Sevenfold
Tenacious D
MisFits
Fight
Perfect Circle

Not sure about the Misfits. They're one of my favorite bands, sure, but the Danzig-era stuff gets its deserved amount of love, and the two eras proceeding his departure weren't very good. Not bad, but not anywhere as awesome or influential as their earliest records.
Loretta Lynn doesn't really get any love these days, despite being the only good country act now. I love how she didn't shove herself into an artificial role to sell herself to the new breed of middle-class Wal-Mart-praying hick-wannabies. Her latest album (produced by Jack White) was just an awesome throwback, and a good callback to when country was music instead of a socio-political marketing ploy.

The Frames. And any other band with Glen Hansard. While very popular in their own country of Ireland, and gaining some popularity with Glen and Marketa Irglova in the Oscar-winning movie "Once", they still never really got any true recognition by music lovers. Their music is absolutely beautiful, and I guarantee after you see "Once," you'll be checking them out on YouTube, myspace, etc.
Not recommended for biased metalheads.

You do know that Keane did a cover of "Under Pressure"? It's the B-Side to the "Night Sky" single; it's a pretty faithful cover, and Tom Chaplin manages to hit the high notes, and more.
Ahh, Perfect Circle...good band, there. I think people were expecting it to be a "Tool-lite", which, yes, A Perfect Circle and Tool are both "rock", but that's essentially where the similarities end. Tool makes nine-minute-long progressive epics, while A Perfect Circle comes out with radio-worthy rock numbers such as "Weak & Powerless" and "Three Libras".

Okay, so I don't even know if they're underrated or not, but go listen to them anyways!

Fuckin' Wolf Parade, I fell in love with them from the first song of theirs I heard, I bought the album the next day and it blew my mind. I then preordered their second as soon as I could and it too blew me away. I won't post links because I'm too lazy to find them, but if you want I'd reccomend;;
Kissing the Beehive-long but amazing, and a good example of their second album habit of taking a few songs and turning them into one,
You Are a Runner and I Am My Father's Son-should am be capitalized? Oh well, first song I heard, still blows me away
California Dreamer-My second favorite song on their second album (first is Kissing the Beehive) and definately an awesome tune.
