16 enter...One Man Leave.
I'm gonna keep this mostly heavy metal style, so if you're looking for Clapton, he ain't here! I'm pulling for my man Yngwie to shock the world, in round 2.

Greatest how?
Most skilled?
Most talented?
Most likely to make music I enjoy?
Most likely to make music that the masses will enjoy?
Are you considering that some guitarists are great because they can play music that goes well with other music? Rhythm guitarists such as Izzy Stradlin were never known for killer solos or super fast fingers, but he could make sense out of all sorts of music and bring it all together.
The exclusion of Eric Clapton is fucked up. Just because he mainly plays acoustic now doesn't mean that his original shit was slow tempo.
What about dead people? Hendrix? Will he be on here?

Like GP said, greatest is way too vague. When I think greatest, I tend to think technical skill, and in that category, people like Hendrix, Santana, and even Clapton can't even breathe around the like of people like Petrucci, Via, and Malmsteen, not to mention the multitude of killer jazz guitarists that I need to familiarize myself with.

Like I said, I'm keeping it heavy Metalish. So no Clapton! I love Eric Clapton but it's too hard to compare him to these types. So let me try again... Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarist (Including Eddie) by skill, by most talented, your personal choice, who you think is the best looking, I don't care, just vote!

I voted here for Satrani based on skill, but I'm not a huge Satrani fan, the vagueness of it is kinda high I think, even if it is up to us judgement wise to figure out why they are the best.

Dude, you know Clapton wasn't always playing the acoustic guitar and wussy pop rock.
Cream - Sunshine of Your Love
Cream - White Room
Derek and the Dominos - Layla
The dude belongs on this list even if he doesn't make it past the first round.

Forever Man, if you can forgive the synths, works in Clapton's favor too.
But GP, those three songs, and you could actually count 'Crossroads', are definitely enough to warrant Clapton's inclusion.
Look at it this way, we'd have no Eddie Van Halen if not for Clapton. And without Eddie, half your list wouldn't exist.

I see Satriani's winning. While I voted for Angus, I'm fine with that. I think it's interesting to see that Joe's kicking the shit out of one of his pupil (Hammett), which, Metallijunkie that I am, am fine with, mostly due to Kirk's wah-pedal abuse. I'd pick Mustaine over Hammett.

Nickelback's lead guitarist BETTER be on this list!!!
I voted for Joe Satriani, because at least he was only in Deep Purple in like, the 90s I think, as opposed to Blackmore being their founding guitarist. I just really dislike Deep Purple.

I think we should have just made a topic for discussion as opposed to a poll, because there's definitely more than 16 guitarists that would be contenders of the title. Let's see how many I can name off the top of my head:
Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Joe Perry, Joe Satriani, Billy Gibbons, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Brian May, Tony Iommi, Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrell, Dave Mustaine, Jeff Beck, Slash, B.B. King, Brian Tatler, Glenn Tipton/K.K. Downing, Steve Vai, John Frusciante, Dave Murray/Adrian Smith
Obviously I excluded people (unintentionally), and let my own personal subjectivity leak in so that some may be on the list that people would object to. And those are just lead players, what about rhythm guitarists? "Best" is largely subjective anyway, I largely agree with GP, "how do we measure greatness?" I'll still vote, though.

You're making a list aiming for metal, and can include Kirk Hammett, but not Dimebag or Zakk Wylde? Sad... given Metallica's tendency to overlitigate, I found Black Label Society and Pantera far more listenable than Metallica lately, though I must admit Death Magnetic seems to be putting the tiptoes back into old waters.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |
